-Interesting article. I am a sixty-six year old man who hits the gym several days a week, every week. Being retired, there are fewer obstacles to getting in a good work out then there were a couple of years ago, before I retired. Besides feeling good about being in better shape then most men my age, I also enjoy less arthritis pain than they do. It has been shown that weight resistance strengthens bones and helps diminish the affects of arthritis. Because I do cardio everyday I go to the gym, I have a lower fat percentile and a lower resting heart rate than many other folks my age.

Will I ever step on the Dias in a thong? Probably not. I'm content just knowing I am doing something good for my health and well being. Do I ever check my progress in my bathroom mirror? Sure. It's like a little reward I afford myself. Do I enjoy it when someone makes a positive remark about my "healthy and fit" appearance. You bet!

Sorry young fellas, but you don't have an exclusive on bodybuilding. Check out any gym and you'll see plenty of us old folks lifting along side the rest of you. Some of us, like me, have been doing this for a lifetime and others are actually newbees.

I once met a guy who bought himself a gym membership as his birthday present to himself.

His 85th birthday present. He was the single most inspirational trainer I've ever met. Yes - he wore bike shorts to the gym and they flapped loosely against his legs, but he was always there when I was there, always training hard, always had a smile on his face, was open to everything and keen to learn. He would be 97 years old now if he's still alive. Absolute inspiration.

Well, I've got almost twenty years to go to catch up with when this fine fellow bought himself that birthday gift. I don't wear bike shorts to the gym and so far my thighs are still hardy....but you never know what the next ten or twenty years will bring. Hopefully, it will still find me at the gym training at least five days a week. When someone said it was a lifestyle, I took them seriously.
