For those who have torn tendons
« on: March 15, 2011, 04:47:11 PM »
What was your experience like?  Last night I was doing wide stance box squats with my toes pointed way out.  I've only been doing this for a couple weeks, so I'm not totally used to them and I think my knee wasn't quite tracking directly over my toe.  On the second rep of my last set I hear this "SCRRRRRITCH" and felt a distant tearing sensation... it sort of reminded me of a piece of tape being ripped off of skin.  It felt like my patellar tendon separated a little bit, maybe a quarter to half an inch.

Today my knee feels a little uncomfortable, but if I hadn't had that sensation last night I doubt I'd think anything was out of the ordinary, so there's no significant pain or anything.  Does this sound like a real tear? Should I see the doctor?

It's all in your head.  You need to get over these mental blocks.

When i tore my pec i heard 3 cracks as i went down with the bar.

If you can train on it the next week, it's fine and minor. If you are in pain for a while you need to take time off to let it heal and maybe see a doctor.

Do you have any swelling? I've dislocated my kneecap on 2 seperate occasions from playing hoops, and bother times it hurt like a mofo, and it swelled up right quick. If you only have some minor pain and no swelling I would say you're probably ok, but if the pain doesn't subside after a few days then get it checked out.

Thanks for the advice.  As far as I can tell there's no swelling.  There's just some minor irritation.

The louder the tearing sound, the less damage you're doing. Keep it up.

Had the same thing happen to my hamstring. No pain or bruising. I had some red spotting in the location of where the strain happened. My leg felt really awkward. The best way to explain it is of you inner attachment was made out of a steel cable and the outter felt like dental floss. I was very easy on it for about 2 months and now im back to full speed. There was no pain but i knew something was off. It was probably a partial tear. All you can do is go light and try to rehab it the best you can.

I tore the tendons in my right bicep doing barbell curls with 205lbs and never went to the doctor. I just stopped doing upper body for 2 months and afterward I didn't do any bicep or back exercises for about 5 months. To this day there is an asymetry between my right and left biceps and certain exercises make the old injury flare up. I regret not going to the doctor. However, after watching Deathwish 1,2,3 and 4 multiple times I discovered that I made the right decision. Charles Bronson wouldn't have gone to the doctor either.
