Workers evacuate stricken nuclear plant
« on: March 15, 2011, 07:58:51 PM »
FUKUSHIMA, Japan — Workers at a quake-damaged atomic power plant suspended operations and evacuated Wednesday after a surge in radiation made it too dangerous to remain there, dealing a setback to Japan’s frantic efforts to stem a nuclear crisis.

"All the workers there have suspended their operations. We have urged them to evacuate, and they have," Japan's chief cabinet secretary, Yukio Edano said, according to a translation by NHK television.

Edano said that a surge in radiation Wednesday meant workers were unable to continue even minimal efforts at the stricken nuclear plant.

Megafucked? Doubt it. Europe wasn't megafucked when the Chernobyl cloud blew right over it, and they were closer to that than you guys on the west coast are.

maybe I'm wrong but the amound of material I think we're talking about here dwarfs Chernobyl.  Not to mention all those stored rods outside of the containment core.  If they've bailed on solving the problem, there's a really good chance this all goes.  Don't want to sound like a fearmonger, I've remained kinda quiet on this.  This does have me stressed for real at the point.

haven't heard that yet, so it was just temporary, that's good if true.

i haven't watched news much this week... how bad would it be if the entire plant melted down (and is that likely)?

Cover japan in radiation, and maybe the coast of cali?  or worse?

My guess is that it already has and my guess is that there is a good chance the whole thing just keeps getting worse.  Seems like they're having fires like crazy now and some are guessing they might be from the spent rods which I guess is really bad too.

Clearly the answer is to build a gigantic fan and blow the radiation into China.

I think they organize armed neighborhood watch patrols in order to harass lawful visitors while simultaneously complaining about laws that would require you to show ID.

two ideas:

1) Dig a really deep hole next to nuclear plants.   I'm talking thousands of feet.  Dump the fuel rods into there if shit ever goes shouth.

2) Sell jet packs with a 5-6 minute lifespan for $5k.  Keep them in your trunk or whatever.  Fly your ass 100 feet off the ground when the tsunami arrives.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!

I Just got off the phone with my sister.  She think her husband is worried.  He filled one of their freezers with chickenwings and a closet with beer.  I lol'd so fucking hard, that's the ultimate "you know you're a redneck when" when your emergency supplies for a nuclear disaster consist of chickenwings and beer.

prediction:  They pull the plug on the net in the next week or so.  If that happens, you know it's really fucking bad and they'll want to be controlling as much info as possible.  Hope I'm wrong.

Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. military has blocked access to a range of popular commercial websites in order to free up bandwidth for use in Japan recovery efforts, according to an e-mail obtained by CNN and confirmed by a spokesman for U.S. Strategic Command.

The sites -- including YouTube, ESPN, Amazon, eBay and MTV -- were chosen not because of the content but because their popularity among users of military computers account for significant bandwidth, according to Strategic Command spokesman Rodney Ellison.
