Dude, really. People think of Miami and they think of the opening scenes from Miami Vice and think it is all like that. It ain't. I live in Ft Lauderdale, next county up and I only go to Miami twice a year and hate it.
Crime in proportion to the number of people who can't just speak English, but do not understand English at all. When you realize how many people there are like this, you will have an idea of the crime rate.
One street will have block after block of bars, cafes and high end clubs. One block over the next street will have block after block of homeless people sleeping right on the sidewalk. I don't mean napping either. I mean, they stop their carts, drop their bags and cardboard signs, unroll sleeping bags and climb in and go to sleep.
The happening spots are the Art Deco district on Collins Ave, A1A, and Washington Ave. To get to these places, you have to park 5-8 blocks away and walk through seedy little Havanna type ghetto neighborhoods.

Fake tits. Really, realllllllllyyyy fake tits. I mean, tits so fake they look like a cubist painting gone wrong.
Horrible drinks. Places regularly substitute cheap white wine for tequila and rum in drinks.
Cuban owned Chinese restaurants. (read that again slowly)
The only really good thing about it is the beach between 7th and 14th. That is the most crowded because it is directly in front of the Art Deco hotels.
