Facebook is here to stay. It's beaten Google in page rankings, is stable and very popular with it's users.

There is no reason people are going to leave it for another site.

True, but the thing that's great about facebook (for the general population at least), is it's ease of use. It looks quite clean cut aswell and it's not as cluttered and disorderly as myspace.

Spot on. People love it and have invested too much time there. The brand is sold.

I knew we were in trouble with Facebook when my 65 year old dad was discussing his "farm" with my sister at Christmas dinner.

fb days are numbered. Diaspora is a STRONG contender; it will basically make the "social network" paradigm go free.

Many companies are not too happy with facebook; zynga, apple, rapsody, google.. ... all waiting on the sideline for the "social network" platform to go "open source"..

this will be facebook's Linux...

What do you mean by having the paradigm go free?

Forgive me, but my knowledge of electronic social networks is quite limited, yet I do find its viral-like growth very appealing.

What do you mean when you say open source?  What about facebook (A free website, with the ability to organize with ease) makes it a "close source"?

Facebook pisses me off. I have an account there (yeah, I know - homo) but I don't have any pictures up there of myself and nothing annoys me more when people think it's okay to "tag" me in their pics without my permission. I just untag myself but it's still annoying. But at the same time there's something about it which appeals to human nature to be curious and find out what others are doing. That's probably why I haven't jacked it in completely.

...and here I always thought FaceBook was just a another front for a free dating site where people could browse the personal ads of other members and even engage them in conversations and face-to-face gatherings.

I mean, if not for that, why else would anyone want all their personal information aired on the internet for everyone to see?  Everything you write, any and all pictures you post of yourself are forever property of facebook, why would you risk it?

Also, what's so intriguing about posting up your "status"?  I mean, why would anyone give a flying fuck about your status unless it states something juicy that's worth gossiping about?  If all your status consists of is you giving your buddy list a play-by-play as you go to do laundry and break a $5 bill to make quarters, I'm not quite sure it's worthy of people having to receive updates of that kind of bullshit.

I guess I'm a little too old for this kind of shit.  I just pick up the phone when I want to talk with friends or go to a bar to meet and engage new people.

Sorry for the HOWARD-like rant my fellow homos..

The current generation is used to socializing this way, online and via their mobiles. And it's no different than posting anything in Getbig.

People posting their info is no biggie. Google is a much bigger source of info than Facebook ever could be.

And in regard to your question to Alex, majority of the end users don't care whether a site is open source or not. They just know what they like using.

See, what you've got to understand is that facebook makes the lives of very normal people seem all of a sudden glamorous and/or important. It validates their day to day life. It's very good at making ordinarily unconfident people confident, as it allows them to shape and mould the way they are portrayed by people via their profiles. Like kiwiol said, getbig is just as "bad" in a sense. This place is teeming with people who claim to be something they're not, just like facebook.

These are some over-the-top accusations..

Are you two telling me that GetBig isn't a generational think tank meant to revolutionize the way in which bodybuilding influences the world and future generations to come?

Mere blasphemy sprinkled with cum-coated abominations is what I just read here..

A new app is soon to appear where you can literally take someones photo in the street then then you can upload it and scan it against social networking pics, and thats what is going to happen in the immediate future, imagine the invasion of privacy in 10 years. That is all.
it's 1984 and brave new world come to fruition.

I was just drawing a parallel. I'm not comparing the content of the 2 sites, just saying it's people posting and interacting with a group of people online, which is the same as here.

Of course this is gonna happen. You just gotta keep in mind that whatever you put out on the internet potentially stays there forever and potentially can be accessed by anyone.

Open source software is software whose source code is published and made available to the public, enabling anyone to copy, modify and redistribute the source code without paying royalties or fees.

That's what makes facebook worth billions. It's the information that users around the world freely give away.  Marketing companies would give anything to get their hands on all that information.
