I wonder how much coverage this WON'T get. While there is unnecessary fear about Japan's nuclear, no one has said anything about this radiation leak in Canada which is a whole hell of a lot closer to america than Japan

Canadian nuclear power plant leak confirmed

Mar 17, 2011, 15:37 GMT

Toronto, Canada/New York - A Canadian nuclear power plant has developed a leak and has spilled 73,000 litres of contaminated water into Lake Ontario, officials said.

The Ontario Power Generation company, operator of the plant at Pickering, 35 kilometres west of the city of Toronto, had informed the public of the incident, which was later confirmed by Canada's Nuclear Safety Commission.

Officials said that the day before, the contaminated water was 'unintentionally' pumped into the lake in the incident late Monday.

There were traces of radioactive tritium, but far below the level considered to be a health hazard.

'From a regulatory perspective this is a a very low-level event,' Ontario Power said. 'There is no impact to quality of drinking water.'

The leak had developed in a water pump which in the meantime had been repaired, the operators said.
