Here's a cool story bro.
Back when Chris Cormier was competing he would pose in magazines doing a double C sign with his hands for "Chris Cormier". What Chris didn't know was that a notoriously violent gang know as the Compton Crips used this same gang sign.
One of the Crip members saw this in a FLEX magazine and reported it to his leader who ordered a hit on Cormier because it was a sign of disrespect to flash the sign if you're not a Crip. The gang knew he worked out at Gold's Venice so they steaked the place out until Chris showed up for his workout.
After Chris's workout he went to The Firehouse and the gang members followed him there. They waited until he went to the bathroom and cornered him there. One of the gang members pointed a gun at Chris and was about to execute him right there. Chris was pissed and demanded an explanation of why there was a hit out on him. One of the Crips in particular who was sent to kill Chris was a bodybuilding fan and saw Chris' photo in FLEX. He was a fan so he explained that it was because Chris had flashed their gang sign in the magazine and it was a crime punishable by death.
Chris explained that the double C stood for "Chris Cormier" and he meant no disrespect. The gang members had no choice and were only following orders. Chris then said he was friends with the founder of The Crips, Tookie Williams. Apparently Chris had corresponded with Tookie through letters in the late 80's and early 90's. Chris admired Tookie's build and they became friends through letters. In fact, Chris had the prison's telephone number in his cell phone and he said he'd call Tookie right then and there. Chris pulls out his phone and waits for the prison operator to connect him to Tookie. Chris said it took a good 15 minutes and the whole time the bathroom at The Firehouse was locked and several people had knocked on the door wanting to use the bathroom. Chris said the gang members faces were covered in sweat the the guy pointing the gun began shaking bad because for the whole 15-20 minutes he never lowered the gun from Chris’ face. Eventually Tookie answered the phone and Chris explained the situation he was in. Tookie demanded to speak to one of the gang members.
Chris didn’t know what Tookie said to the gang member, but said he became white as a ghost and immediately handed the phone back to Chris. The gang member apologized and all three left the bathroom and restaurant.
