Edge Retires
« on: April 11, 2011, 08:03:47 PM »

By Mike Johnson PW Insider:
For those who are wondering, the Edge retirement speech was 100% legitimate and real. We were told by a company source earlier this evening that when the major announcement was made tonight, it was not an angle and not storyline.
The story that Edge told about medical tests coming back and showing there was a new issue with his neck and being advised he must retire is true. He was basically handed a mic and told to go out and say goodbye however he wanted.

http://us.wwe.com/inside/edge-announcement
Less than a week after his successful title defense against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania XXVII, World Heavyweight Champion Edge has been forced to retire from in-ring competition due to injury. The unexpected news brings to an end a storied WWE career spanning 13 years and consisting of 11 World Title reigns.

The Rated-R Superstar had been suffering numbness and uncontrollable trembling in his arms and hands. This is not the first time Edge has experienced these symptoms of nueropraxia. An MRI administered at Atlanta Midtown Diagnostic Imaging last Monday was sent to Dr. Joseph Maroon, a renowned neurosurgeon and professor of neurosurgery at The Pittsburgh School of Medicine. After careful examination of the MRI, it was determined that Edge would never be cleared to compete again, and thus, he is forced to retire.

In 2003, Edge underwent a two level spinal fusion of the discs between his C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. After being cleared to compete, The Rated-R Superstar returned to the ring, resulting in stenosis of the spine, or a narrowing of the spinal column, above and below the fused discs. This narrowing resulted in less and less of the vital fluid needed to protect the spinal cord. Medical professionals cannot clear Edge to compete ever again in WWE since doing so could result in paralysis or even death.

Good move. He's made his money and he's risking possible paralysis if he continues to wrestle. He's worked some very unforgiving matches to his body in his career. Especially some of those TLC matches during the late 90's, early 2000's. He's provided a lot of entertainment to fans.

This would be sad to me if I actually watched any longer.  I have thought he was the best in the business for a number of years now.  I hope he has been smart with his money.

Now, let's talk about those eleven world titles. :( :(

He has. He has a huge house in a secluded ranch in North Carolina.

I remember his debut like it was yesterday. It's scary to think he was going into a ladder match in the condition he was in...sad to see him go but at least he won't be in a wheelchair and hopefully will have a good retirement. He sure as hell earned it.

After Raw went off the air, Randy Orton gave the RKO to Alex Riley. John Cena then gave the Attitude Adjustment to The Miz.

Both Cena and Orton paid their respects to Edge, who announced earlier in the show that he would never compete again due to a serious spinal condition. Cena referred to him by his real name, Adam Copeland. Cena recalled Edge winning the WWE Championship from him in the Elimination Chamber and that people thought he would never amount to more than a tag team champion.

Cena mentioned that when Edge said he was leaving due to medical reasons, he wasn't joking. Cena asked for one more send-off from the audience so Edge could hear them backstage.

Cena placed the microphone in the center of the ring and the crowd gave Edge a standing ovation. Both Cena and Orton left the ringside area to conclude the event.

A great ending to a spectacular career. The Ultimate Opportunist. The Rated R Super Star. The guy went off from day 1!!!!!! Thank goodness he didn't enter that Ladder Match. These guys that have been such a huge part of my life are all retiring. Thank goodness he's getting out before it was too late. Great he went out as Champ. Let him go home for a year. Relax and regroup. Then come and join the Broadcast team. Thank you to Edge for all the years of entertainment. HOF next year?

Agreed 100%

It looked as if he hurt his neck on Smackdown, when he speared Brodus Clay. Is that what triggered it (or the proverbial back-breaking straw).

I noticed that too..he grabbed his neck right after it. Anyway, according to SD spoilers, they are having a battle royal and the winner will face Del Rio for the belt at Extreme Rules.

While I'd like to wish him the best, all of WWE's past retirement/firing bs makes it hard to believe that he's not gonna come back in six months. WWE recently ran a storyline in which John Cena got fired and made the heart wrenching farewell speech, only to show up a week later.

I think this is the first time I can recall where the guy himself has come out and said he was retiring and stating medical reasons that everyone knows are legit. IMO personally I haven't been a huge fan of Edge as a singles competitor, I always thought he did his best work with Christian, however I hope by retiring he will be able to live a comfortable (physically) life.

Edge comes out and gives a recap of his career. He says he is going to miss all of it. "Thank you" chants fill the arena. Edge says he wants to do his intro one more time. He's pumped now and talking about how great the WWE doctors are and says he's taking his girl and going surfing. Edge is happy he got to say goodbye in Albany because it's the place where he won his first championship. In fact it was in a cab in Albany where Edge came up with the nickname Edge. He introduces his mother who is sitting in the front row and thanks her for all her support. To him his title has meant everything to him but the belt is not his. Edge says every fan holds a piece of it as he relinquishes the belt. Edge says it's been a heck of a ride concluding another emotional shoot of a speech.

20-Man Battle Royal to face Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship in a Ladder Match at Extreme Rules. Participants include Big Show, Chris Masters, JTG, Yoshi Tatsu, Trent Barreta, Heath Slater, Ezekiel Jackson, Chavo Guerrero, Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Tyler Reks, Kofi Kingston, Drew McIntyre, Cody Rhodes, Curt Hawkins, Christian, Jack Swagger, Rey Mysterio, Brodus Clay and Kane. Justin Gabriel is eliminated by Barrett. Final four are Christian, Jack Swagger, Justin Gabriel and Rey Mysterio. Mysterio eliminates Gabriel then sets Swagger up for the 619. Michael Cole interferes and takes the 619 for Swagger. Swagger eliminates Mysterio. Christian eliminates Swagger to win the match. After the match, Edge comes out and celebrates with him. Edge and Christian pose in the ring as the entire locker room clears out to applaud them on the ramp

Yeah, it's certainly not the norm.
I vaguely remember Arn Anderson coming out on Nitro and relinquishing his "spot" to Curt Hennig.
That announcement was prefaced with a brief discussion of nerve damage in his arm, etc.

I never followed Arn's career too closely, and I don't know how much of that promo was a shoot, but...

I, too, much preferred Edge WITH Christian.
His work rate & quality were on par, but I just never dug the character of "singles-Edge."
