the modern movement of 'power building' has a lot of young hardcore guys transfixed and they scream blue murder if you question it

i remember a guy who trained at our gym around the same level as me, he would kill me poundage wise, and he pulled a realy good mean face.... but i could bury him at ease on stage, even using half the poundage on most exersizes

Local Hero: So true. How many potential national or world records are left in the gym. Guess you could call it stage, or platform, fright. Well, as said before, lifting can be more mental than physical at times. Guys have their game face on, but not their heart.

I'd like to rant about bodybuilder wannabes and other goons in the gym who do plenty of olympic lifts in their training programs.  These guys use the excuse of "powerlifters are BIG!" as their sole reason for training with weight that's way too heavy for them for low reps...because powerlifters are big.

Well.  I tell ya what.  I'm all for keeping basics like benches, squats and deads in a bodybuilding program...that's smart.  But going for singles, doubles, triples...wtf?

There's a reason you never see a ripped powerlifter.  Train like a powerlifter, look like a powerlifter.  Train like a bodybuilder, you'll look like a bodybuilder.  For some reason you just never see these guys in the gym dieted down, nor do they look anything other than a big bulk of mass.

At least be honest with yourself and admit that you train for strength and not much else.  That I can respect.  But shitting on bodybuilding methods because so-and-so powerlifter has with huge legs trains heavy with low reps is foolish.

That is all.

Why would anyone want to look like the un-athletic bags of meat known as modern bodybuilders?

Being a powerlifter myself, but first trained to look like a bber, I must say that powwerlifting is much more functional than training to be a pageant. Powerlifters are actually athletes, bbers are not. Terms of comparison must be made at the same level, so if you speak in a "world level bber" ::) you need to compare it to a top powerlifter of the same bodyweight, but I must warn you that being on a thong isn't criteria to establish the camparison. powerlifters own bbers by a mile. powerlifting is actualy an extreme sport!

I predict a 50 pages thread... I quit training like a bber because it was not functional... since 2006 I train and compete in powerlifting and let me tall you that powerlifting is a fucking insane sport, it takes anyone to the limit and beyond. I mix it with boxing lessons at saturdays and it is great! I have more aerobic ability, speed and strength at 109kgs than I had with 96kgs, trying to be a bber ::)

It's obvious that there is a huge discrepancy in diet from one powerlifter to another.  They actually look very good if they keep a good diet.

"bodybuilding training" is just fine as long as it works for you, but if you never do any singles doubles or triples then the weight on the bar wont be increasing fast enough for you to grow optimally.. need to train strength too

They should include next to the trophies a box of twinkies and a chocolate milk :)

Being fatter helps on squat and bench numbers. There is method behind the madness.

I don't care what anyone says it's true.

Of course it does, you can just bounce the bar off your chest, if you get flabby enough it could just be 2 or 3" rom

but at some point you realize you're a fat blob, a whale and in public there is no difference between you and an obese sloth because random people in public don't know you can bench 405 or whatever.

There are exceptions. The guys in restricted weight classes are forced to be lean. Most heavies aren't lean though, and I believe it stems more from than just being lazy in the dietary department.

Give more credit and benefit of doubt where it's due.

Most here that call someone at fatass that can handle 2-3 times their weight won't hold much weight (no pun) to their opinion. Walk the walk first.

Or powerlifting and crossfitting.
