Washington (CNN) - As the Republican presidential primary race continues its slow march out of the gate, a new poll suggests likely GOP voters are significantly less satisfied with the potential field of contenders than they were four years ago.

Less than 50 percent of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents give positive marks to the still-in-flux GOP presidential field, down markedly from 2008 when nearly two-thirds said they were happy with that cycle's crop of candidates, according to a new ABC News/Washington Post poll.

And in another sign no potential candidate has yet to register momentum within the party, only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney scored in the double digits (16 percent) when likely Republican voters were asked who they would support in the primaries and caucuses. The answer "no opinion" by contrast was the response of 33 percent of respondents, while an additional 12 percent said flatly "no one."

Behind Romney comes perhaps-serious candidate and business mogul Donald Trump at 8 percent, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, at 6 percent and 5 percent respectively.

Several other candidates were at 2 percent or less, including: Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who has said he will not run.

The telephone poll was conducted April 14-17 and carries sampling error of 5 points.

It's sort of like 2008 all over again, on both sides.  Too bad we can't get better candidates to run for higher office.

yeah, it's true.  Imagine if we had Christie, Jeb, Perry, Mcconnell, Hutchison and a few others talking about the 2012 race.

This further solidifies my belief that most repubs just 'kinda know' that an incumbent, no matter how shitty, is really tough to beat.  Can you imagine a jeb/Christie ticket?  holy shit, obama would be crapping his pants.  Instead, we'll end up with Trump-T-Paw?  Oh sheesh.

Do I believe that Jeb's PNAC agenda (he was the chief co-author) would benefit the nation greater than Obama's socialist agenda?  Sure, why not?  I can admit jeb is like Dubya on steroids - but I think in the name of national self-preservation, he'd limit the tacx cuts while limiting entitlements at the same time.   You know, not quite "let's gie the rich folks the farm" like the unpopular paul Ryan plan.

So yeah, i'd love to see Jeb in the mix right now.  Sorry, but trump, palin, bachmann, tpaw and mitts - they all seem a little too eager to please.  Wait til you hear trump in the Gutherie interview... "i'm more pro-defense than all the other repubs" and "i'm pro life now" and other statements to the base that are just so transparent.  Jeb?  he'd tell it like it is.  Same with christie.

I guess i worry about a candidate that tries TOO HARD to be liked.

Please, not another Bush, ever.  It would be like a Chinese dynasty at that point.  They are one of the most evil families in the world.  Do some research on them.  Bush Sr's dad was a Nazi.

You'd think with Repubs constanstly saying how Obama is the worst POTUS ever and everything he does sucks that they'd be lining up for the easy victory in 2012

I'm sure their message of tax cuts for millionaires and privatizing Medicare will bring them a landslide victory

Most Republicans and all independents would rather vote for a jar of mayonnaise than Barak Hussein Osama.

In actuality, it is irrelevant who runs in 2012 as long as its not Sara Palin or Donald Trump. Osama will lose.

As a matter of fact, the year before Katrina hit New Orleans (BTW, it grazed us, before it went there), we got hit with FOUR hurricanes in succession: Charlie, Ivan, Frances, and Jeanne.

that's right - the year 4 hit here - that was crazy.

i remember when the hurricane charley took my power for a week.  sucked but the police were everywhere, the nat'l guard locked down port charlotte, and aside from looting businesses in drug town during the hurricane itself, things were fine here.

pretty funny driving to punta gorda to visit a friend the next day - nat'l guard with rifles locking down US 41... nobody got thru.

my band was supposed to open for the rembrants (the friends theme song) the morning after the storm hit.  club's roof was gone.

the SOS gym we trained at thurs morning in punta gorda lost their roof and their AC units were thrown hundreds of feet.

light poles still down a year later.

crazy stuff.  it really did take 5 years for the place to recover.  businesses you'd been to so many times were just gone.

palin's fault, according to 61% of alaskans (the literate ones)
