Why is it that most bigger guys in the gym, who may compete locally, carry themselves in a manner that suggests that they think others are envious of them?  Does anyone else notice this (besides croatch who thinks its all juice related) ?

  • Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
It's how they make themselves important in life and ahead of others.

Depends - in a way they are right... most folks join a gym to gain some muscle and they've got plenty of it.

True.

Also even if you only compete locally, you are probably much more muscular than the average guy on the street.

The gym is most likely the only place they're better than most others. Financially, professionally, pscychologically they're in last place

Nope. It all depends on the gym. People who want to just be fit should not join a hardcore bbdg gym. I find that most serious hardcore bbdr's keep to themselves and just do their thing.

Most? That's not the way I see it. I've been in gyms with local competitors. Most of them are fairly nice people.

I'm not so sure about this.  They might have learnt certain things (discipline, goal-setting, effort etc) which could help them out in any area of their life.

And being physically in good shape can be great for confidence and self-esteem.

sounds like this is spoken by a small envious person, i pretty much doubt they carry them selves any differently, other than having alot of muscle mass,, and obvioulsy feeling very confident in that environment

what ive found in every single case, is that when you ask advice from one of these gentlemen, theyl give you a little bit of there time and some great 1st hand info

  • there can only be one...
i think people who are not serious about lfting  should stay out of hardcore gyms
and go to leisure centre gyms or ballys...
not fair on serious lifters to have their only place of lifting to be over run by summer and new year trainers and little jokes who do 18 sets of cable crossovers
choice is an illusion

I feed on Gyms with Musclehedz, the more hostile the environment, the better. I walked into one of these Dungeon one day, the sound of these prison Plates clashing was deafening, it seems like everyone was busting their balls, breaking a sweat and getting this last one rep out of their energy.........there is nothing wrong with a Big Mofo in the Gym with an attitude. just stay the fuck out of his way.....lol

These raise some serious followup questions.  Please enlighten me gentlemen.

What constitutes a 'hardcore gym'?
If a gym is a 'hardcore gym' why are people who arent 'serious about lifting' inclined to join and thus getting in your way?
Who is the ideal member of the 'hardcore gyms'' owner?
If I rep'd the 140's on incline for 9 reps last chest workout, but after did 30 minutes on an elliptical, where would you suggest I join?

Please tell me how to appropriately navigate the following scenario:
Ive seen 'local hero' pretty consistently at a golds for the last two years.  One day, I ask him for a spot on the military press.  After I finish a set of 285 for 6 reps.  He says 'nice set', to which I say 'thanks, let me know if I can return the favor'.
'Local Hero' then says 'yeah, Im 14 weeks out from my next show'.  To which I say 'cool'.
He says 'its at the high school auditorium over in blah blah, you should come check it out'.  To which I just kinda nod my head, knowing I have no interest.
'Local Hero' then says, 'you ever think about competing?  youve got some decent size on you'.

So what is the appropriate response?
1.  'No, I find competitive bodybuilding both gay and pointless.'
2.  'Actually I won my heavyweight class 10 years ago, but stopped competing when I realized competitive bodybuilding was both gay and pointless'.
3.  'No, I find competitive bodybuilding both gay and pointless, but if youre competing in 14 weeks, you really need to do something about your arms, they cant be more than 16 inches'.
4.  'So what do you do for a living?  Oh youre a late-thirties personal trainer.  Wow that must be great.'

Please advices
