Nearly Half Of Detroiters Can’t Read
« on: May 09, 2011, 11:01:15 PM »
http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/05/...ers-cant-read/

Let's hear it for the Department if Retardation. The Department's mission is: to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.

DETROIT (WWJ) – According to a new report, 47 percent of Detroiters are ”functionally illiterate.” The alarming new statistics were released by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund on Wednesday.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with the Fund’s Director, Karen Tyler-Ruiz, who explained exactly what this means
.
“Not able to fill out basic forms, for getting a job — those types of basic everyday (things). Reading a prescription; what’s on the bottle, how many you should take… just your basic everyday tasks,” she said.

“I don’t really know how they get by, but they do. Are they getting by well? Well, that’s another question,” Tyler-Ruiz said.

Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34 percent in Pontiac and 24 percent in Southfield.

“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.

Tyler-Ruiz said only 10 percent of those who can’t read have gotten any help to resolve it.

The report will be used to provide better training for local workers.

Note: Illiteracy rates are from the National Institute for Literacy, as reported in a new study by the Detroit Regional Workforce Fund.

I dunno. My little one's teacher is great. I'm in her class at least once a week as a parent volunteer. My daughter has grown so much since September. I'm so sad that she won't have her next year because she is a great teacher. She really seems to care about the progress of the kids. She can't be more than 26  either.

I don't have kids and see the trash on the corner when it comes out of school.   Disgusting.   I see these ghetto leeches and parasites every day bothering business people etc.

For example - I have a pizza place across the street from me.   Small place.   There are 4 tables in there.  The owner is an albanian guy and most of the workers are mexis.  i have been going there for years.   The wife works in there, they bust their ass and dont make a ton of money.

Other day, about 10 fat leeches come in and take up all the seats.   One girl ordered one slice and a soda.   $3.   They were cursing, loud, boisterous, etc.  The owner told them - "girls, I dont mind having you hear, but you have to order something".   These parasites launched into a tirade, refused to leave, called the owner racist, made fun of the mexican guy, etc.   The other customers on line were uncomfortable, etc.  I told one of these low lifes "have fun being on welfare the rest of your life, you fat mess."   They started with me and I just laughed at them and said - have fun being a welfare queen your entire life and walked out.

I see this crap day in and day out.   Sorry - "Teachers" and public school system is a joke in the country.  Teachers are given far too much respect and credence for the terrible product they are delivering.

Try getting an average teacher to work an extra day and see what happens.  I dont know about other places, but I know a lot of teachers, and most are grossly overpaid and underworked and do nothing but complain about pay and tell themselves how under appreciated they are.

As for this story - I wonder who these 50% voted for last election?

If you tally up the total compensation of the average teacher, in NY, CT, NJ, they are grossly overpaid.   Its not just salary, its the pension, time off, health benes for life, less than 8 hour work day, the colas and step ups, etc etc.

No, I'm not calling them bastards, but am saying that for what they are paid, the work product sucks and is grossly over priced.

I agree.

However this was what you wrote earlier:
"teachers" who are nothing more than rapacious leeches to the taxpayers.

There is a big difference

Ok, I should not have made such a broad statement, I'm only going by what I see in NYC, westchester, and people I know personally.

Crack Pipes Often Disguised As Novelty Items At Stores

DETROIT (WWJ) – Be careful of what’s being sold under the counter.

Crack pipes are being sold at neighborhood stores from Detroit to the suburbs.

That’s according to  former Detroit police officer David Mahalab, who says the pipes are disguised as novelties.

“To avoid police detection and to try to avoid the law, they put a pen insert – (in) a glass tube, and try to evade the law, which talks about paraphernalia and stuff that has a second use,” says Mahalab.

Mahalab says they’re also disguised as a ballpoint pen or small glass vases with a rose sticking out of them.

Mahalab says people may be surprised where the pipes are being sold.

“Dollar stores, gas stations, liquor stores, virtually every store in the 6th Precinct that I did enforcement with, were given a ticket and found guilty. I’ve seen them in Allen Park, Dearborn Heights and Garden City,” says Mahalab.

Mahalab says the pipe sales are lucrative, but bring crack addicts and crime to neighborhoods.

33386 has a point about NYC schools. When I lived there, sometimes I'd walk my ex's niece and nephews to their school. First of all, I'd see the teachers in the playground area, swearing, yapping on their phones, dressed like god knows what. The first time I brought them, they didn't question who I was. I was able to walk right into the school. Not saying all schools are like this but seems pretty consistent in Manhattan and the Bronx

I don't care for how the middle school is in my town, it's the only one. Grant it I have 6 years before that happens and perhaps it will get better, but will look into going into private school.

You may want to consider homeschooling. A number of parents find themselves in your predicament. The public schools sucks but they may not be able to afford private school.
