The South Koreans are notorious for their gaming cults.  Hell, they broadcast the results of the Star Craft tournaments on the evening news, people have been literally killed over virtual items in some of the games.  One dude's girlfriend killed him because after they broke up in real life he logged into her account and stole some really rare sword or some shit so she goes over to his house and stabs him to death.  It's pretty fucking hilarious.

The South Koreans are hopelessly lost in a world of shallow consumer culture and petty hierarchical power plays.

They are too deluded and brainwashed to see their own situation clearly.

So they escape into a virtual reality. And they get addicted just like someone who uses drugs as an escape.

South Korea represents exactly why raging capitalism can be pretty fucking ugly and dystopian.

And there are 2 TV channels in South Korea that play Starcraft contests 24/7.

The Korean people have been brainwashed into believeing that drugs are evil. So almost nobody does drug in Korea.

Just drink, smoke cigs, get fucked at the massage parlor, and lose yourself in video games.

 That's Korean culture.

South Korea represents exactly why raging capitalism can be pretty fucking ugly and dystopian.

South Korea is only moderately capitalistic, so blindly blaming capitalism as the cause of the societies ills is not only patently false, but also a statement made by someone with elementary at best knowledge in economics.  Capitalism is not only morally superior to socialism but also frees the people, not restrict them.

 LMAO!

What the fuck are you talking about? South Korea is 100% consumer capitalist. Proabably even more than the US.

What criteria are you basing this on?

Consumer capitalist? Do you even know what you are talking about?  Obviously you do not.  The criteria of economic freedom is what I"m basing it on.  South Korea is ranked as a moderately free country, around 35th or so which is high, but not anywhere near 100%.  Ease of doing business, which also equates into this correlation is a large factor as well.

You're outright blaming, capitalism on South Korea's social issues, which there is no correlation whatsoever in any data I've ever seen.  So show me your data instead of spewing out some boring communist diatribe about the evils of capitalism or go back to finger banging your keyboard to zerg your Starcraft opponent.

You're talking about macroeconomics and big business. You're talking about how huge corporations do business.

In the life of the person in South Korea though, it is 100% capitalist.

You're trying to lower SK's level of capitalism based on restriction to big businesses. This is not really applicable to society at large and the citizens.

S.Korea is not that free in large part due to Neo-Confucianism.

And how does Neo-Confucianism relate to gaming addiction?

Korean society, through Neo-Confucianism, results in a soul crushing life situation where creativity is quashed and individual expression is minimised (euphemism). I had seen many artistically bent children not allowed to pursue their talents, music is done for the sake of competition, not enjoyment or artistic expression. Most young people have no avenue for expression leaving only the escapism we know as gaming. This happens to adults as well; all they do is work with little to no holiday time and many are highly depressed without any acknowledgement of the condition. There are some good points to Korean society but this is not one of them.

This is true. The conservative, confucian, hierarchical, super image concsious society in Korea makes people very unhappy and makes them want to zone out and escape.

Koreans usually can't really see this for themselves or articulate it, because they are indoctrinated into it so deeply. But to the outsider it's very apparent.

Combine this with the fact that drugs in Korea are very scarce, and most Korean have never even tried any rec drugs besides alchohol. And you have people zoning out on video games for an escape.

Americans usually escape with sex, alcohol and drugs. Koreans escape with sex, alcohol and technology.

I love Koreans.  Good people.  Had a blast interacting with the locals when I was stationed there. The gaming addition is very bad and I'm sure worse than here in the states but I've seen some bad gaming situations with Everquest and World of Warcraft in the states...I've seen lost marriages, jobs etc...I was a big WoW guy but I felt too disconnected from everyone else if I played too long...Awesome game though and if I ever get any free time, I'll play other MMORPGs.

I know two grown ass men that sit at home all day and play World of Warcraft. One of them is trying to figure out a disability scam so he never has to work and can just be plugged in 24/7 and the other is on unemployment. This seems like a new addiction but chances are they would have lost themselves in some other self destructive habit.

Well I guess just missed you by a couple years over there. I moved to Busan in late 06, been travelling around Asia ever since.

Korean people are alright. They are just brainwashed and confused.
