IFBB 202lbs will become IFBB 212lbs and under
« on: May 10, 2011, 05:22:47 PM »
202 class becomes 212 starting at this year's Sacramento Pro Nov 5th )

http://www.ifbbpro.com/news/advisory-notice-202-to-212/

Seems like a big weight increase.  Should have raised it to 205.

Seems completely arbitrary, why not 208 and 15/16th?

It is official. After November 5th, the 202lbs and Under Contest will be gone. Done. Caput. But, a new contest will begin, one that is 10 pounds higher for the pros.

The new division started in 2007 at the Europa Super Show in Dallas with the first contest – the 210lbs and under, designed for the smaller bodybuilder who felt he could not compete against some of the mass monsters. Silvio Samuel won this contest, with a weight of just under 210 pounds, dominating the contest, with Tricky Jackson second.

Shortly afterwards, the rules were changed. The weight changed from 210 pounds to 202 pounds, in part because they wanted the smaller bodybuilders to have a chance. And it worked… or did it?

On May 10th, the IFBB Professional League issued a new change to the 202lbs and Under Contest. Starting on November 5th, 2011 (the Sacramento Pro Contest), it will be going from 202lbs and under to 212 lbs and under.

So were the bodybuilders surprised? Some where, especially the smaller bodybuilders who are now concerned they are going to compete against some of the more heavier pros who want to be freakier but not lose those last few pounds. We will definately hear more about this new rule in the coming weeks.

If you look at my past posts, I make a big stink of this to Bobert Chick on why it needed to be changed.  I take it my idea was submitted and I'll receive full credit.  Thank Bob. ;D

The 202 Pound Class will have an entirely new look in November – so much of a new look, in fact, that the weight limit will no longer be 202 pounds. The IFBB Pro League announced today that, starting with the Sacramento Pro this November, the class weight limit will increase to 212 pounds.

The decision comes after months of deliberation and after numerous competitors – including 2010 Europa Show of Champions 202 winner Eduardo Correa and 2010 Europa Super Show 202 winner Seth Feroce – announced their intentions to move up in weight to compete in the open division this year. Others, like two-time 202 Showdown champ Kevin English, have also considered making the move to the open division.

Moving the weight limit up to 212 pounds gives these and other top competitors reason to continue to compete in the division. It also opens up the possibility of some of the lighter open division competitors – such as Hidetada Yamagishi – to compete in the 212 division at some point in the future.

The move is in some ways a return to the roots of the lighter weight class. Absent for years – since Frank Zane won the lightweight division and overall at the 1979 Mr. Olympia – the IFBB Pro League brought the lighter division back in 2008 with a 210-pound class at the Europa Super Show. The 210-pound class lasted only one contest, as the weight limit was lowered to 202 pounds in 2009. The weight limit will remain at 202 pounds through the 202 Showdown at this year’s Olympia

The change was inevitable, and planned from the start...the reason we changed it initially, is that we felt the class needed to grow, as well as the athletes in it. now that we know the class is here to stay, we adjusted it to where it represents a good split to allow for the majority to be competitive.

Wonder how many new guys this will bring into the division?

It seems like you've got regular 202 guys like Flex Lewis etc and then there's a huge jump to guys competing at 225 and over - doesn't seem to be much in between.

I think it'll be a case of allowing the smaller guys to get bigger rather than having guys at 220-225 going down. But we'll see.

Wonder if for the Olympia this class will get the title "Mr Olympia 212lbs" this year?
To me it seemed unfair/disrespectful they have a "Miss Olymipia Bikini" Title but the under 202 weren't given a "Olympia" title...I mean most of those 202 guys have been around way longer, work way harder those bikini models!  ::)

LMAO so easy to see that Kevin English is having to much trouble getting down to 202 so they just raise the weight class 10 lbs and make sure he retains MR.O title

Chick is right.  Seth Feroce, Hidetada Yamagishi, Ed Correa and Kevin English no longer have to diet down to exactly 202 pounds to compete here and lose some muscle mass.  So with 212 pounds, they can retain a fuller more muscular appearance.

But yes, some of the competitors who have never reached 200 pounds ever are complaining, as it will be much harder for them to make the top three now.

Still, when there were two divisions a long time ago for the Mr. Olympia, the cutoff was 210 pounds.

212 lbs would be alright if they were actually 212 lbs max on stage.  They need to change the weigh-in to the morning of the show instead of 2 days before.
