Save the Bees, destroy mobile phones!

Lausanne, Switzerland (GenevaLunch) – Turn on your cell phone, yes, but not around bees, if you appreciate what they do for the world. That’s the message from Lausanne researcher and bee specialist Daniel Favre, who in April published “Mobile phone-induced honeybee piping” in the bee journal Apidologie.

His research team studied the impact on bees of cell phone and discovered that they are disturbed by the signals. This is not just a sweet little gardener issue, for the economical role played by bees in worldwide pollination has been estimated to have a value of around 153 billion euros.

I like bees, honey is brilliant. I remember a time before the ubiquity of mobile phones, we can do without them if it means preventing crop failure and starvation.
