spying on you in restaurants.
« on: May 17, 2011, 03:17:35 AM »
Ok, I went into McDonald's a few years back and a sign on the door caught my eye.  It was a security sign that said something like "we're watching, and listening"  It was the "we're listening" that caught my attention.  So I searched the security company on the net when I got back home just to see wtf.  On their homepage they showed pictures of the surveillance. There was a room full of people, each with like 9 monitors in front of them.  Each one able to listen in on what was being said at any table.  They also had a list of participating restaurants which was pretty long but I remember Olive Garden was one of them.  They bragged about how super sensitive their microphones where.  Kinda fucked up thinking that while you're eating at Olive Garden some fucker you don't know is watching and listening to you.

Anyway, I posted this shit a few years back but the post is gone?  Just wanted to see if anybody else had seen any of these type of signs when you're getting something to eat?

Yeah I guess if they are blantanty announcing it which in this case doesn't sound like it.  If I was informed my conversions at a table were being recorded I wouldn't patronize the business, for sure.

A sign that says "we are watching and listening" could mean many other things.  Such as " we employees, are watching and listening to what you desire". Or it could mean we are alert to the things you Do and say ithe restaurant.  Bottom line is that a sign like that is vague and ambiguous.

What it needed to say was something like this:

The entire dinning area is under video and audio survalence from a separate location.  Your conversations at the tables you eat at as well as your actions are being monitored.

LOL im sure the sigh had something else on it like a security symbol or name of the company.

How do you think hugo knew the name to search on the internet?

I dont think its necessary for them to go that far, they let you know they are listening and watching.

if you dont like it dont eat there...

I think you should be able to have a private conversation with the people your eating with.  Most people probably don't take a security sign to actually mean there is some dude with a monitor several states away watching and listening to what you're saying at the table.

Depends on what that the sign says.  If it says you are being monitored, that's what I would expect happen, and I wouldn't eat there.

most people are use to the security cameras.  everyones got them these days.  So being video monitored is one thing.  Taking that to some guy watching and listening to what you say at your table is another.

Anyway, I didn't want to crusade about this here.  I just wanted to know if anyone had seen the same type of signs.  Just curious if the practice is growing.  I'd still eat there, just say all kinds of crazy shit about the clown listening lol...  and I do think they need to be clear that listening means a mic planted to listen in on what your saying and that there is some dude actually doing so.  Most people expect video monitors to just be recording to some drive in case something happens and the cops can look at it.

I do as well, but its certainly within their rights to moniter you while youre in their establishment...

Its certainly within your rights to not eat there...

so long as they are making it known youre being monitered I really dont have a problem with it.

I havent really noticed any signs like this I always notice signs on the doors of convienent stores like that(I dont work in the best neighborhood) but not really on food places. That being said I havent really ate out at places that would have things like that going on lately much anyway(mostly home cooking kind of places lately).

The issue for me here is that the sign is vague if that is all it says.

I agree with all the other stuff.

I agree, but the fact of the matter is they told you that you were being listened and watched.

We assume to what extent it is...It would be bad for business if they said "Hey were listening to every word you say"

Just had a chance to stop by the mcdonalds that had the "we're watching and listening" sign.  They removed the sign and listening equipment.  No company logo anymore and just have the standard security sign now.  So it looks like that shit didn't fly well with people.
