I recently did research on this subject and bought a camera in December. After reading the reviews, and getting suggestions from friends who are into this stuff, I got the Cannon T2i. There are always deals on these things on sites like slickdeals.net. I got the camera with an additional lens and some minor peripherals for $800.

I've read that the T1i, which can be had for under $500 now, is a great starter camera if your're getting into buying a DSLR camera for the first time. I spent the extra money on the T2i because it captures video in 1080p. Recently, the T3i debuted, but, from the limited research I've done on this one, doesn't appear to be worth the extra money.

So far, the camera has been fantastic, and I've barely scratched the surface on its capabilities.

Canon and nikon both are great. But go
canon unless you got a nice nikon lens.

Question is if you want it to be a professional DSLR, and what do you need it for?

Also, remember, some of the lenses can cost as much as the camera or even more.

Do you want to take it with you everywhere, or just bring it out on special occasions?

Let me rephrase the question for Ron,...do you want to try to be an artist?...if the answer is yes, dslr with the most pixels you can get. I am unfamiliar with the prices,...but you can never go wrong with a Hasselblad. I have a sivler halide one and boy the transparancies are Sharp

real artist only used film.

Canon 7D, Canon 40D is what I have. Taking pictures and being creative is one thing, learning photoshop, retouching, and getting the pics done is another thing.

The 7D with a lens is 5 pounds. I am not about to take it all over the place, besides worrying about it breaking, getting wet, etc. So I use it mostly for when I want good quality pics.

As for a Hasselblad's, if you seriously have one and spent the 10 grand + on it, enjoy. But most people shoot with Canon or Nikons.

Do your research on www.preview.com. It's a huge database of almost all digital cameras-- even discontinued ones.

Huge, I have yet to check out Bay's previews.com recommendation, but I am a camera collector and purchase about two cameras of various types (still and video) ever 12 months or so ... and I always refer to Cnet.com for information regarding specifics and wrldwide best prices.

About an hour ago I bought a $150 Kodak video camera (mini) foor $89. Super small (about the size of a half pack of cigarettes) HD, and with all tthe bells and whistles

Do check out Cnet.com before you spend your hard earned $$$. And give some serious consideration before spending anything over $500. Some great cameras are available for half that price.

While we're on this subject ..... check out red.com.

A family member has this camera and speaks about it very highly. It is so good that it is being used to film major Hollywood motion pictures.

And while at it .... check out Go Pro (GoPro) on YouTube and Stedicam-Merlin..... especially if you're interested in video.

I picked this bad boy up for my wife from Amazon last year:

Samsung HZ25W

12.5 MegaPixels, 24X Optical Zoom

Was a tad over 200 dollars. Thought it was a nice happy medium between a standard digital camera and a DSLR.... She certainly loves it!

And for the thread starter, check out the Sony NEX-5 it's a happy medium between SLR's and point and shoot. It has a very large sensor, shoots full HD and is very good in low lighting (thanks to the sensor). It's comparable to SLR's image quality and is cheaper and smaller.

This is less of a joke than you think,...If you want to make extremely large sharp enlargements,...a 4X5 in photo sheet has around 400 megapixels...you can blow that up to photo mural size with excellent sharpness.
