Senate Republicans Vote Overwhelmingly To End Medicare

The GOP continued its bloody walk into the Medicare buzzsaw Wednesday, when 40 out of 47 Senate Republicans voted in support of the House GOP budget, and its plan to phase out and privatize the popular entitlement program.

The test vote failed by a vote of 57-40. But the roll call illustrates that Medicare privatization -- along with deep cuts to Medicaid and other social services -- remains the consensus position of the GOP despite the growing political backlash against them.

Voting with all of the Democrats against debating the plan were Sens. Scott Brown (R-MA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME) -- both 2012 incumbents -- along with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). Rand Paul (R-KY) voted against it because it wasn't radical enough.

Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Pat Roberts (R-KS), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) did not vote.

Democrats intentionally scheduled the vote less than 24 hours after a Democrat won a special election in New York's 26th -- and heavily Republican -- congressional district, on the strength of defending Medicare from a GOP onslaught. The outcome of that election heightened the political stakes, but sent few Republicans bolting for the exits.

"I've been surprised a lot of the times about how they're voting here," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid at a press conference after the vote.

To shelter GOP dissidents from the vote to privatize Medicare, but also to shore up their bona fides on the right, the Senate also held a test vote on a similarly austere alternative budget authored by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA). The key difference? The Toomey plan remains vague on the question of how to reduce Medicare spending over time. All but three voting Republicans -- Collins, Snowe, and Brown -- voted to proceed with that plan, which would slash spending at a faster rate than even the House budget.

On tap, too, was a test vote on President Obama's 2012 budget, now shelved as Vice President Joe Biden negotiates spending and deficit cuts with a bipartisan group of Congressional leaders. All voting members opposed the plan, which failed 0-97, providing Republicans a talking point they're already trumpeting, and will push hard this election season.

"Everyone knows that if something happens with the Biden group or perhaps the Gang of Five, then there's going to have to be some type of instrument, and that's why we don't want to do the budget thing now, because we have all these other things going on," Reid explained.

Rounding things out was a test vote on an eye-popping plan by Rand Paul to dramatically and rapidly slash the size of the federal government -- in part by abolishing a number of federal agencies. It won the support of a small core of the most conservative members of the GOP -- Sens. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Jim DeMint (R-SC), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Mike Lee (R-UT), David Vitter (R-LA), and Paul himself, along with his Kentucky colleague, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. But it failed by a wide 90-7 margin.

Bye bye republican votes!

I hope the older generation have learned their lesson.  They made awkward bed mates during the Obama care debates and now it just goes to show the people who really want to take away medicare are the republicans.

LOL!  I remember obama voting "present" all those times.

Repubs are so screwed on this issue.

There is no plan.  This is politics!  It doesn't matter what's right or wrong, it only matters to get elected and re-elected.

The Dem plan is the Rep plan and vise versa when it suits.

Dick Cheney: 'I worship the ground Paul Ryan walks on'
 Source: Politico

Former Vice President Dick Cheney doesn’t want Paul Ryan to run for president — he likes the House Budget chairman too much.

“I worship the ground the Paul Ryan walks on,” Cheney said Wednesday during a rare public appearance, the Houston Chronicle reported. “I hope he doesn’t run for president because that would ruin a good man who has a lot of work to do.”

Support for Ryan’s budget plan, which includes an overhaul of Medicare, has become an early litmus test for the GOP presidential field. The plan was also a definitive issue in the special election in New York on Tuesday, where Democrat Kathy Hochul won one of the most Republican-friendly congressional seats in the country. Democrats have heralded that victory as a sign that Americans oppose Ryan’s plan.

0-97
Unanimous rejection
By POLITICO STAFF | 05/26/11 5:22 AM Updated: 05/26/11 12:13 PM

The budget proposal released by the White House back in February didn’t win a single vote in the Senate on Wednesday— the final tally was 0-97. Senate Republicans pushed for the vote as a counterpoint to the defeat of Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget plan.

POLITICO’s David Rogers reports: “The vote on the president’s plan turned into a rout, with neither Republicans nor Democrats voting in favor of taking it up. At one level, the 97-0 vote showed how out-of-date the February requests can seem after so much has changed in the spending debate already this year. But for Democrats, it also proved a convenient way to mask their substantial internal differences over how to proceed” on addressing the government’s fiscal problems.

Even Bill Clinton admited this this week alone that the Dem plan to do nothing is wrong.

Honestly.  It doesn't bother me.  I'm not some debt adverse psycho like yourself.  I firmly believe that America will come out of this fine and that history will smile upon Bernake and Obama for their handling of the recession.

In the long run, Democrats will pay because they did not provide a better plan than Ryan's and refused to go along with the Republicans in making significant cuts to expenses. People are easily scared now. But, wait until those programs are completely gone and it is traced back to be the result of the socialist legislations of the Democrats. LOL!!! Democrats are short sighted. They have no vision of prosperity. Only of dependence and that will cost them big time in the end.

I don't know how that is going to happen when by every economic factor the Stim Bill has been a failure and Obamacare is unconstitutional. Neither Obama, nor Bernake have come up with a single legislation that has improved the economy. The UE hasn't been anywhere of 8% and by early indications, it seems it will be around 9.4% when the report comes out next month.

LOL!!! History will not be kind to Hussein Obama.

Trying to PRIVATIZE it you mean?

What if that had happened?  the 2008 crash leaves 1/4 of americans without their social security?  Great plan that would have been :)
