if he were a private citizen then no one would even know about this

even if an employer knew about it unless they guy employee did it on work term, work computer or it was somehow a public scandal then it's very unlikely that they could fire the person without following procedures, given written warnings, etc....

That all depends on the offense, I have seen some at my company canned on the spot, others an "investigation" before being terminated. Now Europe is another story all together, it's damn near impossible to loose your job, short of corporate espionage

The problem with this is, he is an elected official, he works for the US. Not a private corporate entity. So things like this reflect badly on the government ( not they really need anymore help with that). Public trust and all that good stuff that has long been extinct.
