A Democratic lawmaker familiar with discussions with and about Anthony Weiner tells CNN that Weiner’s colleagues are telling him this afternoon he should resign “to preserve his own dignity.”

This Democratic congressman says that this afternoon’s public call by Democratic Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pennsylvania, for Weiner to resign is part of a new stepped up effort to force Weiner out. The source said the effort includes private and public calls explicitly telling him it’s time to leave Congress.

“There is increased resentment by his colleagues that far from having a press conference where he was going to tell the truth and roll with the flames, the flames are just getting worse and he’s dragging us through it. We really thought by now, after the press conference, we would be able to talk about the Republicans’ Social Security privatization bill and instead we keep talking about Anthony Weiner. And people are getting angrier and more resentful,” said the Democratic congressman.

The lawmaker would not speak for the record in order to discuss private conversations, and would not give the names of Weiner’s colleagues making these private calls.

Indiana Rep. Joe Donnelly told POLITICO Wednesday that embattled New York Rep. Anthony Weiner should step down.

In a statement in response to an inquiry, Donnelly, who is running for Senate said that the Brooklyn congressman has "disgraced the Congress" and indicated he would give away the campaign contributions he's received from him.

"Enough is enough. It's time for Congressman Weiner to resign. His actions have disgraced the Congress. Everyone should be focused on jobs and the economy and his refusal to do the right thing is a distraction. I will donate the $5,000 I received from his campaign committee prior to 2011 to charities in Indiana," Donnelly told POLITICO.

Donnelly appears to be the second Democratic Senate candidate to call for Weiner to go. Former Democratic National Committee chairman and Virginia Senate candidate told a local television station Tuesday that Weiner should leave the House.

The National Republican Senate Committee had been pressuring Donnelly on the issue and issued a fresh batches of releases Wednesday calling on Democratic candidates to take a stand on Weiner's future.

Ohio Rep. Betty Sutton was the first Democrat to rid herself of Weiner's cash. Minnesota Rep. Tim Walz has also dumped his money. And earlier Wednesday, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee official Allyson Schwartz called on Weiner to resign.

Pennsylvania Rep. Allyson Schwartz became the first Democratic House colleague to call for Weiner’s resignation

The seven-term New Yorker has made no comment since saying at a news conference on Monday that he was not resigning.

The 46-year-old lawmaker initially resorted to denials last week when asked about a lewd photo of himself that was sent to a woman via Twitter. He recanted at an extraordinary news conference on Monday during which he apologized for his actions but said he was not resigning.

It was nearly 9 p.m. on a Friday when Cordova, who was preparing to head out for the night with a friend, logged onto Twitter and discovered that Rep. Anthony Weiner had sent her a suggestive photo of himself in gray boxer briefs.

"It didn't make any sense," Cordova, a 21-year-old college student in northwestern Washington state, said in her first extensive interview since Weiner confessed in a news conference Monday to sending her the photo. "I figured it must have been a fake."

Cordova's experience with Weiner appears to fit a pattern: In rapid and reckless fashion, he sought to transform informal online conversations about politics and policy into sexually charged exchanges, often laced with racy language and explicit images.

Cordova, who had text-messaged with Weiner, a New York Democrat, about their shared concern over his conservative critics, said she had never sent Weiner anything provocative. Asked if she was taken aback by Weiner's decision to send the photo, she responded, "Oh gosh, yes."

Nah. Poor form. Enjoy the props of the apology and the higher road (which he actually DID have here!) by not going with the porn angle. Then, whipping out phone with a big grin to relish in the moment.

If you're gonna be the bigger man - and that was pretty cool of him not to release that pic even though Weiner did diss him wrongly - then be the bigger man.

Don't take the praise for it - then smugly show off the photo a day later, ya know? Brietbart was the winner here. Then he resorts to a lack of decency he rallied against a day earlier.
