Work in family business (marketing firm). Last 2 years were very slow. This year is picking up. I make half of what I did 06-08, but enough to pay down my debts from the last 2 years and put some away while living comfortably.

Not rich, not poor, not retiring anytime soon.

say that to amazon, google, apple, any hedge fund, etc.  they're doing ok from business loans, investors and partners.   ::)

you're classified as a "small business", so you can get by on no loans.  me and the old man have a family business, and also have no loans, investors or partners, but if we're ever to get out of the "small" classification, we'd need millions to get started.

But like any company big or small they take a big hit during a bad economy due to their debts, even in a hard economy they still have to pay those debts which brings profit margins lower. Companies like Microsoft, Walgreens, Cisco, Chik fil a and more don't really struggle due to either no debt or very little.

It seems like American people never will admit if they are poor or have a crappy job.

They always lie. ike they think it's shameful if they don't make tons of money.

Capitalism got them brainwashed I guess.

You claim to be a teacher in a third world country, unless you're doing it because you really want to help people, seems you're the one with the crappy job.

c. interesting.

a. Rich is a relative term. At one point I owned a C-store in a very good location that brought in quite a bit of income in addition to my job. We cleared about 20K a month on gas and inside sales.

b. All income I have is legit. No corruption

c. Not much interesting about it really.

What happened to the store?  Did your former better half make you sell it?

I run a software company in Bangkok - a small subsidiary of a rather large MNC. Selling mostly into US & Japan.

It's very tough times right now - we've been through a lot of cutbacks and every time it appears business is picking up, it ends up a false start.

Still - my skills in preparing estimates are now second to none, even if I can't remember the last time I actually signed a contract....

I also have a little sideline in niche daytrading software - www.jigsawtrading.com

Not to mention daytrading the US Futures markets in the Thai evening/US morning.

I should do less to be honest.

I'd like to address a. again just for fun.

When I became an officer money wasn't an issue. I didn't care what it paid, I just loved doing it. A lot of fortunate things came into place over the last 19 yrs that really have made it an excellent career in many ways, at least at this department.

We have retirement options like the DROP which allows you to sell back up to 3 yrs of your service time for a lump sum payment. You can DROP forward up to 5 yrs.

a Lieutenant with 28 yrs of service could retire, selling back 3 yrs of service at $120K X 3yrs. $360K lump sum. His last check will include 1700hrs of sick time and 400 hours of vacation he sells back which is standard procedure at  $56 an hour or $117,600.

So the average Lieutenant with 28 yrs of service retires with $477,600 pre tax to place in a PROP fund or simply his or her bank account. That doesn't count the deferred comp account they have contributed to over the years.

On top of that, their annual retirement check for the rest of their lives is around $95K a year.

I'm with you on that not being rich, but honestly, for people who started their career never expecting to make very much money, it's a pretty sweet retirement for the Texas area.

Well at the time... I was concerned for her future and agreed that if she let me keep my retirement intact and left my deferred comp alone, I would let her have the store. In retrospect, I think I was too nice considering other things that went on during the divorce.
