I was doing a study on ancient war and there was an account that a young King by the name Essarhaddon of Assyria sieged the walled city of Babylon, pop...180 000...around 630 BC, they cut off water and food supply and sourounded the city on all sides for an entire year, the Babylonians inside the wall collected the dead daily within the wall and scattered them throughout the inside perimeter of the wall, once the Assyrian broke the wall and enterred nearly 5000 men had died from the stench of the dead bodies, good tactic on the Babylonians side, nothing compares to the smell of dead corps
