In bodybuilder slang, Gordon Kimbrough is known as "a chemical machine," someone who used steroids and other drugs to help create a Schwarzenegger-like physique, which he displayed with pride at competitions around the country.
He subjected himself to years of strict diets and punishing exercise regimes to develop his 5-foot 10-inch frame. He also used drugs to build up to an impressive 240 pounds.
Now friends and fellow bodybuilders wonder if the drugs betrayed him in the end. They wonder if it was the steroids that stoked his rage and drove him to kill his girlfriend in a fury last week, as the police say he did.
The police say Mr. Kimbrough stabbed and then strangled the woman, Kristy Ramsey, 27, the day after returning from the national amateur bodybuilding competition in Durham, N.C. Ms. Ramsey was also a bodybuilder and w an aerobics instructor at a popular city gym, where Mr. Kimbrough also worked.
