Ways to fix asymmetry in different muscle groups?
« on: June 24, 2011, 11:07:12 PM »
What have you guys done to fix these issues? The main one for me is my arms. I am right handed and I would say my right arm is a good inch+ bigger than my left. I've tried doing more one handed exercises a couple, more reps on the lagging side but nothing seems to help. Is it just a genetics thing or am I going about things all wrong?

Obviously you're talking about hypertrophy and not function.

Injure your right arm. Perhaps arrange to have it shot by a rifle or run over by a truck? After it recovers, your symmetry issues should be fixed.

...In all honesty, that sorta happened to me. I'm right handed, but my left arm is almost an inch larger than my right arm now. :(

I guess its time to go start a fight with some huge tapout kid so he can put me in an armbar so I can fix this shit lol. Some days its not that noticeable other days its bad. I hate some of the things you start finding out about your body as you lose weight.

Is there a difference in strength? Or only in size?

If the latter, it's just genetics and how your muscles happen to look like.

There is a slight difference in strength but its not huge. Sometimes I'll struggle a bit more on the last 2 reps with my left then my right.

I can sympathize; the left side of my body seems to be stronger than my right side. Maybe you could pre-exhaust the weaker half at the start of your workout?

Stop using barbell  for this completely.
Use only dumbbells.
Use numbers, eg keep the strong side limited to what the weaker side can do.
Give it up to 4 to 5  months.
Will be all rectified.

^^This, and do many unilateral (one side) exercises. Start with your weakest arm

Keep in mind that the coordination from the lagging side may not be perfect, so you might pull something off  :-X

Not necessary, just too confusing between work outs.

I do this sometimes to trick myself into thinking somebody else is doing it for me. Kind of like the lazy mans stranger lol.

There is a slight difference in strength but its not huge. Sometimes I'll struggle a bit more on the last 2 reps with my left then my right.

For starters use dumbells a while and do sets for the weaker side first. However many reps you get, do 1-2 less for the strong side.

Honestly I had the same issue and I found a simple exercise I had never bothered to do that has solved it completely. Bilateral dumbell preacher curls. No clue why but for some reason it seems to really force each side to do it's own work. Has done wonders for my biceps, and I mean wonders. For triceps I have a slightly smaller left side so I start with one arm cable pressdowns cross body ala Dorian and make sure to get 1-2 reps more with my left side and focus on the contraction. You may find like I did that the stronger/bigger side seems to contract better than the other. I think it's a strong mind muscle connection thus slightly higher reps will, over time, build the connection to the weaker side until it matches the other.
