Found something very interesting - Check it out
« on: July 04, 2011, 06:50:21 AM »
my parents told me about an exhibition that shows black and white pictures of people that have agreed to have their picture taken a short time before they died.
99% of these people were already living in hospice which are places were people like you and me can die with dignity without the crap that comes with hospitals etc.

The pictures are extremely peaceful, the one with the boy at the beginning however nearly broke my heart.

IMPORTANT READ THE TEXT: it gives a brief overview what these people have thought about themself while standing on the door to the next world.

http://www.noch-mal-leben.de/h/exhibits_4_en.php

Note these are only snippets - the book has all images and text.

Quote
Few experiences are likely to affect us as profoundly as an encounter with death. Yet most deaths occur almost covertly, at one remove from our everyday lives. Death and dying are arguably our last taboos – the topics our society finds most difficult. We certainly fear them more than our ancestors did. Opportunities to learn more about them are rare indeed. Photographer Walter Schels and journalist Beate Lakotta asked terminally ill people if they could accompany them during their last weeks and days. This exhibition explores the experiences, hopes and fears of the dying, and gives them one more opportunity to be heard. All of them agreed to be photographed shortly before and immediately after death. The majority of the 26 subjects portrayed spent their last days in hospices. All those who come to such places realise that their lives are drawing to a close. They know there is not much time left to settle their personal affairs. Yet hardly anyone here is devoid of hope: they hope for a few more days; they hope that a dignified death awaits them or that death will not be the end of everything. In preparing this exhibition, Walter Schels and Beate Lakotta spent over a year in hospices in Germany.
Our thanks are extended to all those who participated in the exhibition and their relatives.

Heiner Schmitz saw the affected area on the MRI scan of his brain. He realised immediately that he didn’t have much time left. Schmitz is a fast talker, highly articulate, quick-witted, but not without depth. He works in advertising. Everyone has to be on top form, on the ball. Normally. Heiner’s friends don’t want him to be sad. They try to take his mind off things. At the hospice, they watch football with him just like they used to do. Beers, cigarettes, a bit of a party in the room. The girls from the agency bring him flowers. Many of them come in twos, because they don’t want to be alone with him. What do you talk about with someone who’s been sentenced to death? Some of them even say ‘get well soon’ as they’re leaving. ‘Hope you’re soon back on track, mate!’
“No one asks me how I feel”, says Heiner Schmitz. “Because they’re all shit scared. I find it really upsetting the way they desperately avoid the subject, talking about all sorts of other things. Don’t they get it? I’m going to die! That’s all I think about, every second when I’m on my own.”

Walter Wegner
age: 81
born: 18th December 1923
first portrait taken: 1st December 2003
died: 13th March 2005,
at Helenenstift Hospice, Hamburg

In November 2003 Walter Wegner moved into the hospice. He no longer wanted to be a burden to his lady friend at home. He has brought his electric organ with him, ‘but it’s hardly worth me practicing any Christmas carols: I’ll be dead by Christmas.’ But things turn out differently. He’s still there on New Year’s Eve. ‘I came here to die’, he says morosely. ‘So why aren’t I dead yet?’
Wegner lives to see the spring, as well as the following autumn. His partner’s visits become increasingly rare. On Christmas Eve 2004 he plays ‘Silent Night’ for the others. On a Monday in March 2005 one of the nurses says to him: ‘You’ve been with us for over a year now. You’ve recovered so well, this is no longer the right place for you. We’re going to have to ask you to move out soon.’ Wegner flourished in the hospice, he is afraid of the residential care home. He asks his partner: ‘Can I come home?’ She refuses.
Walter Wegner dies five days after the conversation with the nurse.

I am waiting for the autopsy pic of Muntzer.

But seriously: these people look tranquille, all their facial muscles are relaxed.

2nd hand, but i met someone once who died when they were a kid. was swimming in a river, drowned, and was recusitated 10 minutes or so later. he said all that happened was that everything in his vision and mind disappeared, went into a small white dot, like what you'd see when you'd turn off an old tv, and that was it til he woke up with someone banging his chest on the riverbank.

no god/his grandma waiting/elves etc, just fukk all...

Yet another morbid thread from our resident ghoul!

Your in that age were you should be more open to the aspect that you will without a doubt die one day - no matter how much you up the dose.
I am faszinated by death, not the horrible vulgar death which is displayed on theync and other webpages, that is cheap and to be honest if you
have seen one unlucky bloke getting his head squashed by a truck you have seen them all but in a more spiritualistic way.

People don't treat death right these days, with all the plastic surgery and trying to look younger we are obsessed by the aspect that deat will not
happen to us, I be you people in the past were much better prepared.

I struggled many times if what I display is the right thing, I tend to lean to the side that I want to show a side of the conflicts that the media so desperatly try to avoid.
These days war is extremely clinical, nintedo pilots on the button of an Predator shooting hellfire missiles at targets that are little dots on the screen, its all very distant
and as I said clinical, I personally think the more we give war a humane face the more dangerous it gets.

Many of my members understand that mostly the once that have servered and or have seen war of some sort, the once that give the fucking shit stupid comments are
just a byproduct.
But you are right overall I don't feel 100% happy with the page.

I wonder how many "heroes" would still be up for it if they took it back to medievil times

200 people in one side, 200 on the other side. No guns, But knifes swords and whatever else you wanted to bring.

and on 3 everyone rushes everyone and fight. Until one side is dead.
...Can you imagine that kids that were up for that shit back in the day. nuts.

Movies and books make it seem like these wars were epic, but in reality they were probably hit and run skirmishes that went on and off for hours.  Honestly, how can you show off your skill/bravery when you are surrounded on all sides and could be stabbed in the back at any time. Sure there was some skilled involved, but if you survived war back then it was mostly luck.
