There is truth to this as for the most part slaves where treated VERY WELL by people of note and wealth lest they want to be cast in a poor light as a brute among high society.  Slaves usually ended up bankrupting the estate as their families grew, hence more mouths to feed, more buildings and quarters to built.  Masters also grew close to many of their slaves.  For instance, the first owner of my house had slaves and gave a few each acreage and ownership rights to that land to do as they wish with.

When the Slaves were Emancipated many of them were lost, torn from their families and had nowhere to go and nothing to do.  They no longer had the care of their masters and the North DID NOT WANT TO EMPLOY or treat Blacks as equals.  In fact, the North could not stand the thought of blacks migrating.  A few brave African-Americans migrated north in trickles only to be met with extreme racism and a poor existence.  Many returned back to the south hoping to link back up with their former masters.  Most, who did not try to migrate, wished to stay on with their masters as the North provided Zero opportunity.

If they wanted to get worked to death and have door after door shut on their faces, shot in the street and no chance of owning anything, the North, after the Civil War was the perfect place a Black man could go.

First of all not all blacks in the south were slaves, second there were black slave owners. So before you start with the whitey shit learn your fucking history.
