A jury has decided that a set of rare gold coins found in a bank deposit box rightfully belongs to the U.S. government.

The decision, made on Wednesday, caps an unusual civil case that combined history, coin collecting and whether the set of rare $20 "double eagles" should have ever let the U.S. Mint in 1933.

Federal prosecutors had asserted that the coins never circulated when the country went off the gold standard. Most of the batch was instead melted down.

But Joan Langbord, the daughter of a Philadelphia jeweler, said she found the 10 coins in her father's bank deposit bank after he died.

She said that her father could have acquired them legally, perhaps through a trade of gold scrap.

One 1933 double eagle sold for $7.6 million in 2002.

Doesn't matter... They just stole someone's property.

I wonder if they tried selling the gold at auction.    I have to research this.    Sounds interesting.

The problem is that the woman should have just sold it as scrap... The refiner certainly wouldn't have told anyone.

But, she wouldn't have gotten 7 Mil for it that way... Just what the gold is worth.

That would have been a sweet find to sell 10 of them at 7 million a piece.

I can't even find a few nickels in between the couch cushions and these people are finding gold coins.    Fuck me!

If the coins were never meant for circulation how did the father acquire them?

agreed.  anything that is done by any of the govt employees is directly approved by Obama himself.

What difference does it matter? There is already a precedent that the coins are sellable... For the government to come in jack someone else's property is horrendous.

Imagine if you were walking in a forest and you found some old Gold coins from the union side in the civil war... Does the government have the right to just take them from you?

No... but that's just what happened here.

Depends on how the owner came across the gold coins.  If they were stolen then his family has no right to them, just because time has passed does not change that fact.

This is the piece of information which is missing.  Because a jury ruled in favor of the government i have a feeling this man came across these coins in less than scrupulous ways.  Even if he didn't ignorance is no defense.  If i have a stolen TV that i 'found' the rightful owner should be able to get that back no matter how much time has passed.

That's not true... There's a statute of limitations on thievery.

Every person who got stuff stolen from the Nazi's didn't get it back... time has passed and people have no claim to items.

Looks like it was a jury trial.  The government won in court, they didn't just take it.
