I'll tell you another trick they use.  When you are sitting there negotiating with the salesman and he has to go back to talk to the manager they hear everything you are saying at his desk.  The desk is bugged so they can listen to what's your bottom line price on buying the car.  This happens at so many dealers.

Another reason to go in and offer X amount over invoice. Of course this is not what they pay, but so what. I have no problem with them making money. Doing it this way assures that you don't have to deal with all the BS and you save a few thousand also. With that being said I would never buy a car from a dealer ever again. Buy them one to two years old and save a ton.

Aren't they that way in every place?

I hate it when I go shopping for clothes (no homo) the fukin' sellers start to swarm around... it's embarrassing enough for a grown man to shop for clothes and then these stupid bitches think I care what they recommend or value their "expertise"

FUKERS! LEAVE US ALONE WHEN WE DO OUR SHOPPING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The most ironic element of the experience is that once you have made your selection and are ready to pay, you can't find anyone available to take your money.

I remember many of the cheesy slogans that salespeople in all businesses hear:

"Sell the sizzle, not the steak."  ::)

"People hate to be sold, but they love to buy."  ::)

" 'No' is just the first step to 'yes' ."   ::)

"Customers don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."   ::)

"Plan your work, then work your plan."   ::)

When I was woring a summer job at Footlocker, we were told to bring 5 things to the bench...so I got real good at hooking up outfits for the women (tennis outfit, shorts, socks, shoes, sportsbras, etc,) socks, shorts,  for the guys. WHen back to school rolled around, I remember this one sale I wasdoing and I brought a pack of socks for a guy who was buying shoes for his kid---he thrw the sock back at me and and siad,, "We don't need or want your socks! We only came to buy shoes, and that's it. Why do you have to push stuff on people?!"

You might have a high net worth/income, but you're fucking yourself buying a car new from a dealer.  You can find the exact same car in perfect condition with less than 5k miles for much cheaper.

I can't bring myself to absorb that depreciation that comes from pulling the car off the lot.

We didn't by new, we got a 2010 certified pre-owned. I agree with you. Buying new is a waste, but damn I love the smell of a new car.

Everything is designed to make you think you beat the dealer. It's a trillion dollar industry. They are not stupid.  When I hear a moron say they bought a new car for $200 dollars over what the dealer paid I just have to laugh.  They would be out of business if they didn't make thousands per car. They would never sell a car for a couple hundred profit. They are not selling lawn mowers.  They succeeded in the scam that is selling a car while  deceiving another moron buyer that thinks they beat the dealer. They are not that easy a mark.  They will show you a tissue invoice, Ha, Ha. I'm sure it's real.

I got a consumers reports on a new car giving me the invoice on a van I wanted. I went to another source and got the "tissue" invoice.  Lastly I went to a third. I got the van for $2000 under what the they all said the invoice was.  Did they give away the car for $2K under what they paid for it?  No, I bet they made a minimum of 4K.

Car dealers have one invoice if they order one car. If they order 10 it's a different price. If they order 100 it's different price.  An example of this is in NJ   the State Police bought a bunch of Ford Crown Vics and Dodge Durangos.  They bought each one for around 18K.  Now if you did your reseach you wouldn't come close to that 18k being the invoice.  Yet at 18K the dealers dealing with the state was making a boat loads of money.

the best you can do is get a better deal than the clown sitting at the table next to you.

Me 2001 Accord - 2.95%, 0 down, 1500$ rebates, 355$ month
Some Chick and her mom - 17.95%, $2500 down, 0 rebates, 515$ month

we both got the same car, so the bitch dealers made up the difference on the other customers

I have another car since than, pretty much same deal for a pre-owned like coach.

you're talking about needledick customers who want to feel like they won. They just waste everone's time and when they do buy its a minimum commission, so who cares? 80% of customers are impulse buyers and can be put together. Any car salesman who allows customers to walk the lot unattended is costoing the dealership thousands. There's reasons why big dealerships do the same things everytime despite people saying "it shouldn't be this way."

80% of people don't impulse buy a car you dunderhead.

When I bought my Nissan Altima SL a few months back I sent emails to the internet salesman at 3 locations asking for their best price on what I wanted. My criteria was exactly what I wanted, and in their language, taken from their own website so there was no confusion.

Of the 3 figures I got back, I worked with the 2 lowest figures letting each know I was seeking bids from other places. I was able to quickly zero in on one dealership, fine tuning the deal after a test drive. It was painless, I'm told internet salesmen don't require the same profit margin as the floor salesmen as they deal in volume. I got the car at a great price, they made some money, I got the best deal possible.

I had already prepped my salesman with the info that I have walked out of the F&I office in the past and will do so again if I am pressured on GAP, Extended, etc. It was a zero finance deal through nissan so the interest rate wasn't a factor. I was in and out in 15 minutes because the F&I guy was already informed I wasn't interested.

I would recommend using the internet if you're buying a new car.

I know exactly what you are talking about.  Even Beavis and Butthead made fun of "upselling" in one of their segments.  Butthead ordered a burger or something, and Beavis, working as the cashier, asked, "mmm heh heh You want fries with that?  mmm  heh heh"  Butthead shouted, "Did I ASK for fries??  Let me speak to your manager, boy."   :D

This is a common trick by salespeople in all industries.

You're not good enough to own this, (or get this job etc) so you buy it to prove them wrong. What if you say 'yeh you're right i'm poor as shit can you spare a dollar'

Oh it works. Usually with short people. Just look how easy it is to get someone on this board to post a picture of one of their bodyparts knowing damn well they are going to get pwned to hell and back. These sales guys just do a little trolling to get into the psyche of the guy. Look at Groink, the guy was dying to post his new picture even with a disturbing set of bitch tits. Mark my words, he has next to zero legs but over the next month he will find the best lighting and after a 1000 tries he will post a leg shot.

Actually it can be kind of fun, especially if you are looking at a car that you know more about than they do ...

I do it all the time just for entertainment-  and a test drive of course.
