Ron Paul takes third in Washington Post/ABC News poll
The State Column | Staff | Thursday, July 21, 2011

Texas Republican congressman Ron Paul is trailing former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News poll.

The poll is the latest to find support for Mr. Paul increasing. The poll finds Mr. Romney topping the field at 30 percent to Ms. Bachmann’s 16 percent, while Mr. Paul receives 11 percent.

The poll comes just one week after Mr. Paul announced he will not seek re-election, opting instead to focus on his bid for the Republican presidential nomination.

The poll finds Mr. Romney topping the field, while former Alaska governor Sarah Palin is second. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann is in third place, however, without Ms. Palin – who has yet to announce her bid – Ms. Bachmann moves to second, placing Mr. Paul in third place – the only other candidate to score in double digits.

The poll is the first to show Mr. Romney regaining his lead over Ms. Bachmann. A series of polls released earlier this month showed Ms. Bachmann well ahead of Mr. Romney, the first such polls to show the former Massachusetts governor trailing in Iowa.

Mr. Paul, meanwhile, continues to travel to Iowa in an effort to build support for his presidential campaign. The Texas Republican is set to ramp up his campaign in the coming days as the Ames Republican Presidential Straw Poll is set to take place in early August. Mr. Paul has spent nearly $40,000 on securing a prime position for his campaign in the poll, a move that could vault him to the top tier.
