Danny did well in contests because he responded well to hormones just like the rest of them. And at his height, putting on muscle is easier then Lee Priest telling a lie.

I agree that those guys from his era did train harder - some were hitting each bodypart 3 times a week and growing which in itself shows they were on lots of drugs to help them recover so fast..I do think the reason the guys of today cant train as hard or fast is because of there weight and the amount of gear they are on - to much gear just makes you slow and lazy.

But again we all know these guys lie about what they use - even to there closest friends and GF/partners so why is Danny any different - he can still be a nice guy yet lie about what he actualy takes.
the current crop could train 4 hrs if they had a canister of O2 with them, a team of paramedics and a priest

as for usage, the guy can stand in front of you with 3 needles in his ass and a hadfull of pills, yet claim he's off cycle

Let current pros try to do a vacuum like that..... :D

Vacuum? What's that? ;D

I don't think most current pros are physically capable of pulling off a vacuum shot. That pose died in the 90's...

In the end all that "hard" training was deemed unnecessary for the 21st century pro bodybuilder. Work ethic is way over-rated.

;D priest..

danny started training in his pre-teens, he was like 9 or something, according to a star profile interview many yrs back in mmi
great genes & response probably

not disagreeing with you, it may be easier for a short guy to put on size than a gunter, but not "easy", as some people say,
definitely shorter range of motion in training maybe helping in moving bigger weights in a short distance - then again smaller lighter frame, seen footage of priest squatting, basically just bends his knees a bit and he's full depth ;D
, but proportionately, short guys can also be skinny, and have to fill out

Franco Columbu(standing next to 5' 2" Padilla) was 5'6" in the same way that Arnold Schwarzenegger was 6'2".

Danny would have been a very worthy winner of the 81 Olympia. Always thought he was the best small man in the sport.

I trained with Danny for 6 weeks during the summer of 1977. I’ve known him and about 4 of his steady training partners since then’. I also did an interview with him for Iron Man about 6 or 7 years ago. His training has always been the same… old school, little rest 5 sets of 12 reps on every exercise. 2 exercises per body part off season 3 exercises as time gets closer to a contest and 4 exercises contest season. Danny generally lost size and weight off-season and gained weight up to show time. He often only gave himself 7 to 8 weeks to ready for a contest which was when he didn’t place well. When he gave himself more time like the 81 Olympia (where he was shredded) and for the 1990 Night of Champions were he looked biggest is very, very good condition and placed 3rd behind Momo and Dorian.  I’ve never seen anyone’s physiques make changes in size and conditioning faster than Danny. When Danny was training for a contest you might see him on Monday and 3 days later you’d swear his calves, arms, chest where an inch bigger.

Last year Iron Man interviewed Bodybuilder X a two part series (November 2010 and December 2010) and Danny’s drug use was discussed. I can’t give you exact doses but I can tell you he only liked 3 drugs and his total use was very low by today’s standards but probably higher than he admitted. I have no idea who bodybuilder X is but apparently he trained with Danny for 6 weeks in the late 70’s also with Samir, Bill Grant, Mentzers and Leidelmeyer.  ;)

Danny is probably one of the most friendly and humble guys in bodybuilding. He loves to laugh and tells the best stories of Arnold, Ed Corney, Ken Waller and the guys from that era.

What was his training split like at that time.

lolz. Unless a person is making a very good living with something they're truly passionate about, the 4 hour work week makes all the sense in the world.

Don't know it, I look better at 225 though.  I was 230 at age 23, I'm 39 now.  I do about one cycle per year.  I have taken growth with insulin, and I trained with a pro.  I used to be 5'6" 1/2, I think I shrunk from heavy squating, 5 plates 20 reps.  I'll never compete again, my friend was broke and a pro bodybuilder.  I like making money better than chasing a stupid dream where everywhere you look there's a homosexual making offers to you. This creeped me out, never competed since I was 23.  My pro friend was 5'7" 265 back in the day with striated glutes, a fucking freak.  He's still big, some people keep their size, it's genetics, not all drugs!
