Mike, I do agree with most of what you stated up above but if I recall it correctly the very definition of the term "amateur" is generally considered to be a person attached to a particular pursuit without pay,
Up until the 1970s the IOC rules required that competitors be amateurs.
Receiving any form of payment to participate in an event disqualified an athlete from that event.
But times have changed and within the Olympics, this rule remains in place only for boxing .... but I am not aware of how and why it affected other sports organizations.
So it does appear that a change regarding financial rewards for amateur bodybuilders is not impossible, but why would any amateur governing body elect to do so?
I was thinking about this last night.
How about, for starters, THE COMPETITORS DO NOT HAVE TO FRIGGIN PAY TO COMPETE?
Second, how about handing out cool awards, like high end watches and the like. Items that can be sold?
Give the competitors SOMETHING to hang their hat on, so to speak.
The promoters get NOTHING if NO ONE competes, yet all the promoters give back is some plastic trophys (if that) to most of the competitors? That is ridiculous!
Yes, the promoters should make money, but damn they are raping this situation. You have to pay to compete, get there yourself, pay for your hotel yourself, and AT BEST you get a plastic trophy! That is insane!
Some kind of compromise has to be reached in my opinion. This is absolutely ridiculous.
