Say you have a friend who provides a service ~ construction, car repair, landscaping, plumbing, etc. or they own a retail establishment ~ bar, restaurant, specialty store, etc. or they have a specialized skill....

Do you expect them to give you a "deal" or is it okay with you that they charge you whatever they'd charge any Joe Schmoe?

Depends largely on the friend and what he is doing, but in general i'D say yes.

If it's a friend, no problem.

If someone you barely knows comes back for favors you could get into trouble giving them, don't do it.

Brothers, sisters, mother, father, aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins, friends, friends of friends, relations of friends, relations of friends of friends, and friends of neighbors of relations of friends of friends of someone with whom you happen to be involved - not so fuckin' much. I would want to pay a friend whatever their full rate is.

I wouldn't expect to shake down a friend on a service. If they are your friend it would be low to cheat them out of their livelihood. If they give you a discount it's ok as long as it isn't so low that he's working for nothing. I have had friends give me such a low price that I have doubled payment given in the end.

no, here's why:

when we were remodeling our 2nd floor, and refinishing the floors, my old man's "close friend" has a flooring company, and he did it for a "deal".

well, he fucked the job up , not royally but it simply wasn't done well, and when i called him he goes "well, i did it for a good price". after i pointed out to him that i wasn't asking for a discount, that he just gave me one, he basically said i get what i paid for.

to be a nice guy, i paid him in cash too, so not like i could cancel the check, and ended up doing sections myself.

so no, don't take "deals". have him give you a price, but don't ask for discounts cuz it might bite you in the ass.

Good businessmen should be able to separate business and friendship, and never the two should meet. People have to know where they stand with you in a business deal and if you were providing a service to a friend you should treat them the same way as any other business transaction.

I would give a good friend a good deal. I would expect a good deal from a friend. I wouldn't expect them to give anything away and it's more the thought than the discount. I just wouldn't expect to pay what a stranger pays...

Having said that, I'm leary about using friends of friends to save money because I have had some cases where the workmanship was sub par and you just can't demand satisfaction as loudly because it's a friend of a friend thing... I'd rather pay full price and expect 100% quality in those cases.

Most Doctors don't have relatives for patients,...it's hard to be objective...It's the same with doing work for friends.

Okay, slightly different scenario...

Friend owns a gym, a hotel, a car rental place, a supplement shop...

Do you expect a lower rate than what anyone off the street would pay? ie; do you expect them to somewhat reduce their profit margin?
