Flat bench press has become an ego lift instead of a pec builder. some guys won't live unless they bench press week in and week out

Being a competitive bench presser, yes for sure the bench has become a major ego lift.  People cheat like crazy then justify it in their minds that that is their max bench press.  Never has such a basic exercise been butchered by so many people.  Let’s discuss what the delusional do:

1. Having the spotter’s hands on the bar is not a bench press.  Don't give me the it's for safety crap either, he's helping you out period as if you can handle the weight, you don't need his hands there for anything but a liftoff.  Sure it's fine for a forced rep or two if that is your thing, but it doesn't count as a bench press max.

2. Touch your chest or it's not a bench press.  Generally the heavier the weight gets, the less close to the chess the bar gets. No need to explain except to say don't even try the it's bad for your shoulders excuse.  The equivalent of the pussy I can't go deep on the squat because it's bad for my knee's excuse.

3. Butt comes off, often way off the bench.  Simply not a bench press and will get you redlighted in 100% of all powerlifting meets.

4. Over bouncing the bar, actually don't see this one much anymore as most people don't even bother to touch their chest.

I like the bench because it works well for me and I'm strong at it.  Not everyone is built for it and many will get better results doing other exercises.  It isn’t required for a big chest but it can sure help.  However if you are going to do it, don't do it for ego and do it right.

What's considered a good raw lift (competitive maybe) for someone who's 49 and weighs 220? Raw.

I hope to hit a raw and ultra-tight and clean 425 in my meet come October. Drug-free, of course.

Low #400's is the American Raw Masters record(50-59 years old).

220 402 Ernie Nagy USPF 1980

The Masters Raw World is only few pounds past that too.

The best raw and drug-free pressers are doing between 450 and 550.

Look at evan centiaponti he could bench 405 for 8 and his chest still sucks ass. Only a fool tries to kill themselves with heavy weights. Drugs are all that matters. Drugs and calories of course.

Over 15 years ago, I realized that the bench press did not really help much by way of chest development and that, if anything, my triceps and shoulders were the only parts getting bigger.

Since then I've only used dumbbells for incline and flat presses and the results have been phenomenal.

I have also seen MANY shoulder and chest injuries due to the bench press.  The exercise will make you stronger, make no mistake, but it doesn't make your chest look any better, at least in my opinion.

Ego lifting can cost you in the long run...

402??

Most of those odd numbers are because kilos are used instead of lbs in most competitions.

When I was younger, sets of 405 for 10,8,6.  I never went heavier, didn't want an injury.

402??

Yeah, as mentioned Kgs. #220 is an interesting class, #198 is more competitive with Dave Ricks being in it, He's a beast with a #446 American Masters Raw Bench Record.

I find it the total opposite in that most won`t touch a bench press for fear of exposing a fragile ego.  Instead, they make up some excuse of why they only do Dumb Bells or they feign a shoulder injury all because they feel insecure.

Im virtually forced to bench as i train at home. Im 6'1 230 which make me fairly lengthy. My best is 315 for 7 or 275 for 12

a bigger muscle is a stronger muscle.

that doesnt mean you have to lift super heavy weight

it just means that as you grow you have to lift heavier in order to get the same effect
