pedro, your info is great...i really want to go in the winter for 2-3 months..i have two 2 very close gf of mine, but are from manila,,1 is a pharmacist ,the other is a professor in university,,the teacher would love to go to north america, but also would go to thailand, she has friends there and i have talked with and say the cost of living is so cheap, its unreal,,and thats coming from a filipino and filipinas......what can a foergner do there with no colleger education do...i buy and sell real estate and an artist,im a musician..can i ask what yu do?? you say yu have women working for you..thanx pedro, peace

forgot to mention, there both fluent in english, speak and write it better than me,lol

I run a software company here - work is very hard to find here. Most expats are sent here and a lot of others start a business. It's very tough to find a job once you are in country unless you want to be an English teacher and earn $1,200 a month.

Real estate is a pretty saturated market but you might be able to get by in Pattaya. Certainly you can find a commission only real estate job. If you are a musician, that might be a better angle. There's plenty of places that have live music. I have a friend who does music for advertising. Certainly that side might be more fruitful that looking for a 9-5 here.

Good info, thanks man appreciate it!

You say westerners play a few leagues higher. Is that always the case or do educated women avoid western men because they don't want everyone to think she is a bar-girl, like every other thai woman with a white man?
It is my impression that everyone will assume a woman is a bar-girl if they see a farang with a thai girl. Maybe that is exaggerated?

It is a fairly safe assumption that if you have a 20 yrs younger dark-skinned girl, with a flat-ish nose that she is a postwhore.... This ethnicity comes from the poorer areas.

A lighter skinned girl with a shapely nose, well dressed, well educated, well spoken - with a partner about the same age - people will not make the same assumption. Still - there aren't many couples like that here.

In terms of what you can get being a westerner in Thailand. It works the same as anywhere else. The richer you are, the younger/prettier/shallower the girl you can get. Am 80 year old billionaire in the US can easily get a 20 year old girlfriend. It's just that we are relatively more wealthy and so we really go up a few leagues in relative wealth. That moves us up a few leagues in terms of women.

It really is no different to anywhere else in that respect.

Isn't that "alot" in Thailand? I heard factory workers only earn like $300 a month. Maybe 1200 is not that good for a westerner though...

I know what you mean with dark-skinned. Most i've seen here (with white men) have been darker, with very few exceptions.
The lighter skinned girls are so much hotter (no racist) Thailand has some beautiful women, Spicy stuff :D

Nope - $1,200 would give you a miserable existence in Thailand.

I am guessing that you are fluent in the language by now.

What kind of software company are you running?  I guessing not retail since the piracy rate is pretty high there and software can be bought online. So I am wiling to guess that you developing custom web solutions?

I worked more or less a summer in Mangueira favela.  Trying to start a NPO with sister and raise 50k yearly so we can run summer program there, and have hot dogs and beer on roof tops  8).  Get biggers want to donate. ;D

Have your cousin take you Lapa District.  It's a bit seedy but it's away from tourist BS.  Check out restaurants in Santa Teresa, which is also a bit of an art district, a lot of artist. Oh, a favorite of lazy Brasilians is the hippie fair on Sundays.

Remember when you start to go uphill in Rio, as you are walking in the interior, turn back.  You are starting to enter Favela land.

Gracie and Romero Brasil are in Ipanema.  I'm not sure about Bam-Bam

is that in their currency or us dollars?  teaching english in rio was about 1200$ reais or 600$USD a couple of years back.  Seems to be a standard.  That money gets you an apartment on the outskirts of favels, something like 400-500$ reais a month.  but things have changed there the last 3-4 yrs.

Not many - most of them have the body of a 12 year old boy.

I've been a few times. I did hang out at the bars in Patong the first time but screwing hookers isn't my thing (maybe when i'm 60) and seriously i saw about 4 attractive women and heaps of ugly ones. More attractive trannies than women. Got to go to a few Muay-Thai fights and check out everywhere around where we were staying, had a great time. Hanging out in a bar full of hookers just wanting to take ur money isn't a great time to me.

Not a shocker if you were in Phuket. It's were the ho's go when they 'retire' (stop getting customers because of the younger gals) from Bangkok/Pattaya.

If you want to see beautiful Thai girls, go to the Starbucks at All Seasons Place on Wireless (Whittayu) Road at 7:30->9:00 on any weekday morning. This office building is chock full of class vadge. You will see more stunners sitting there for 90 minutes than you will a year in Phuket. Also - try Siam Paragon and Siam Square at the weekends when all the hotties are out shopping.

Nope - USD - $1,200 won't get you much here.

Sure, if you are a young single guy and don't mind living in a shit hole. The rent on my appartment in downtown BKK is $1,500USD and that's not really high.

Just depends on where you rent as well.  I've seen brand new 2 bedroom duplexes furnished in Pattaya for $400 US a month.  Obviously BKK is pricier in that respect, but deals can be found if you look.

But yea, 1200 US a month won't get you far if you plan on living in right in the middle of things.

if you got an international job, you can navigate on spanish alone.  languages are first cousins.  all the workers speak broken english.  now, if you are trying to get a civil servant position or god forbid Distrito Federal then good luck.  you'd do better selling flops on the beach or Mate and living in Rocinha or one of the favelas close to beaches.  You will get standard wages for store or restaurant jobs, something like 600$ reais a month.  That's poor.  I'm sure it's more in post Lula Brasil.  Plenty of ex-pats live in them, not just NPO workers but you have to follow the rules.  it's a bit like being on the South Side of Chicago but 1000 times more organized.  What does your cousin do?  i say have a gig like pedro or make your money state side.

pedro01 - Without knowing anything about your company, how did you get from point A - Thailand?  i'm curious about your path.
