THAILAND-thinking of going there?

if you got an international job, you can navigate on spanish alone.  languages are first cousins.  all the workers speak broken english.  now, if you are trying to get a civil servant position or god forbid Distrito Federal then good luck.  you'd do better selling flops on the beach or Mate and living in Rocinha or one of the favelas close to beaches.  You will get standard wages for store or restaurant jobs, something like 600$ reais a month.  That's poor.  I'm sure it's more in post Lula Brasil.  Plenty of ex-pats live in them, not just NPO workers but you have to follow the rules.  it's a bit like being on the South Side of Chicago but 1000 times more organized.  What does your cousin do?  i say have a gig like pedro or make your money state side.

pedro01 - Without knowing anything about your company, how did you get from point A - Thailand?  i'm curious about your path.

Worked in the UK in IT - then went self employed. Contracted in the UK, then to Knoxville TN, then to Netherlands with Ericsson, then to Denmark with Ericsson, then to Japan with a Japanese corp. This was all working in software for the manufacturing industry. The Japanese corp sent me to Philipines & Thailand to complete the implementation. I chose not to renew my contract with the Japanese corp and took a holiday here. This was in the .com days when IT jobs were plentiful, I landed a job as a regional director for a tech company. When that went tits up I approached the Japanese corp with the idea of me being the MD of their Thailand development centre. They told me they didn't have a Thailand development centre... "well, that brings us to the second thing I wanted to chat about".

The regional director job started in April and it was September when I was offered it. I originally turned it down - I wasn't going to sit on my ass for 8 months. On this, they offered to pay me contract rates to sit on my ass for 8 months. They figured it was the money, not the principle. They were right.

So - at 27 I got paid IT contract rates to stay in Bangkok and not work. I am amazed I survived it (physically I mean).

Not a shocker if you were in Phuket. It's were the ho's go when they 'retire' (stop getting customers because of the younger gals) from Bangkok/Pattaya.

If you want to see beautiful Thai girls, go to the Starbucks at All Seasons Place on Wireless (Whittayu) Road at 7:30->9:00 on any weekday morning. This office building is chock full of class vadge. You will see more stunners sitting there for 90 minutes than you will a year in Phuket. Also - try Siam Paragon and Siam Square at the weekends when all the hotties are out shopping.

you're a regional director for one firm and run your own IT consulting company on the side, or it's just your company at this point?

Right now I just run a firm for a Japanese corp. I am an employee, bowing down to da man.

I do have a little 'hobby business' on the side but it's more a labor of love right now than something that will retire me.

The kids take up most of the spare time.

She is back now (all be it under manners) so I though I would have my say about the London riots, then I saw this tool.

I shit you not, Maids here will work for a bowl of Rice, the going rate in Andheri is Rs500 a month for mopping every day (£6.90 at current exchange rates) we pay her Rs1000 (£14) for doing the washing up & cleaning the bathrooms on top of the mopping.
