He's actually wrong. Standing slightly more upright puts the lats in a mechanically stronger position.

You need to listen, he said 45 Degree, not 90, and he is bent over at possibly that angle.

Actually, I 've seen a transition in Phil---from doing back exercises in the smith machine  to incorporated more free weight movements...Seems like he is getting more serious
