Question for everyone here concerning the next election.
« on: August 09, 2011, 11:46:34 PM »
would you rather see debates where each candidate had like 15 minutes or so to make their case or are you fine with limiting candidates to a minute?

I'm asking because in the last election there were comments made here about what a joke the debates were trying to listen to a candidate spew out a 3 minute answer in 1 minute.  Also the shorter time does make it potentially easier for the media to manipulate the debate in favor of one candidate over another.

Personally I would be fine with a 4 hour debate that gave everyone plenty of time to say everything they wanted to say, there could be one hour of limited time and then the rest could be open to let the candidates talk more.  Something like that anyway.

Just curious what you all think.  Do you like the way debates have gone and if not, what is the fix?

Id agree with that, I think we need to make politics as boring as possible. These 1 minute answers, even in an adhd society we need to make these things as pedantic as possible.

10-15 minute answers are necessary. make debates 4 hours with rebuttals from each candidate if necessary. with todays tech we can have edited versions for each candidate/topic or watch the whole thing unedited online.

go the internet route. fuck the old people who have no access. ... they'll sit for 4 hours watchng a debate. :D

well I was thinking maybe they could do one hour with the quick 1 minute shit for the ADHD and then a little more time for the people who want to hear everyone speak.  The ADHD can turn it off when they've had enough, the next hour would be for anyone who wanted to actually hear the candidates talk...  Something like that anyway.  That's just my thought, I was curious if people were happy with the debates and if not what they think is the fix?

It just seems easy for the media to manipulate the debate when the question has a short response time.  which is probably why so many candidates try to ignore the question asked and just say what they want.

why even bother to waste our time and the candidates time in the first hour. fuck the adhd'ers lol

-give each candidate the same questiont to answer every time.

give each candidate the opportunity to defend himself.
for 5 minutes. or whatever.

good point; the ADHD'rs are probably just voting on which candidate looks and sounds better anyway--which candidate they find more sexy lol...

I have more of an issue with the fact they do not allow EVERY party candidate into the debates. The public should be able to hear from every candidate to be able to make an informed choice. And, just because a candidate may not be a viable choice for the office, they may have a point or two worthy of being heard and discussed.

I dislike the current format.  I think hosts should be more aggressive, and that candidates should have to actually answer the questions.  Like they get a "MUTE" if they don't answer something.

I'm not sure we really even need them in this day and age.  We pretty much know, or can find out, where candidates stand on issues.  They're just going to repeat their own talking points.

And the surrounding discussions are always the same - the moderator is unfair, the questions weren't balanced, such and such got more time, clear bias, etc., etc.

I won't be watching.  Planning a B-day for tomorrow, playing with the dog, and trimming my pubes (metrosexual style) will be much more fulfilling.  :D
