Or suggest it as a project for a local carpentry/woodworking apprenticeship if translucent wood appeals to you. Wouldn't take any more tools than doing bowls if it was bell shaped instead of closed. Just a helluva lot more finesse. Or a CAM lathe.


Or maybe hit up a glassblower and see what he can do. Erlenmeyer flask shades. Or flea markets & salvage? Wrought iron and off white glass is a classic combo but would cost you a bomb to get made. Iron over paper would work and be way cheaper.
If you're on a budget, some cloth that you like wrapped over a wire frame might do the trick. Cool globes, I hope.
