Fiery Exchange At Obama Town Hall

By Ed Henry

Fox Chief White House Correspondent

DECORAH, Iowa – President Obama got into a heated back and forth with a Tea Party activist who demanded to know at the end of a town hall meeting here whether or not Vice President Biden had called members of the Tea Party “terrorists” during the debt ceiling debate.

In public, Obama did not directly answer the question from Tea Party activist Ryan Rhodes about Biden. But Obama fired back that he knows better than anyone what it’s like to be slammed for his political views and was not about to accept a lecture on the topic.

“As someone who’s been called a socialist, not born here, taking away freedoms for providing health care, I’m all for lowering the rhetoric,” Obama said.

Obama did say he would discuss the matter further with Rhodes, founder of the Iowa Tea Party, after the event. And the duo was spotted in an animated conversation a few moments later.

In an interview later with Fox News, Rhodes claimed that the President insisted that Biden had not made the original comment.

“He just denied it, he said the Vice President didn’t make any of those assertions,” said Rhodes. “He doesn’t want to even admit what was on TV nationally — all over the place — then how can you have a conversation?”

Rhodes added that Obama brushed him aside. “Then he said ‘we can’t have a conversation because you’re saying I called you a terrorist,’” recalled Rhodes. “The fact is it demonstrates the deep divide that he is unwilling to negotiate without going after the other side, the whole day was about going after republicans and talking about how unreasonable they are.”

The private conversation between Rhodes and Obama was partially picked up by a TV camera but the audio was a little tough to make out. But Obama in general did seem to be saying the incident with Biden was misconstrued and that if Rhodes wanted to insist that the word “terrorist” was used then they were never going to see eye to eye.

The incident stems from a private meeting Biden attended at the height of the debt ceiling debate with House Democrats who were angry that Republicans were not meeting the President halfway. One lawmakers, Rep. Mike Doyle D-Pa.), went so far as to say that Republicans affiliated with the Tea Party had behaved like “terrorists” during the debate.

Some Democrats familiar with the meeting said at the time that Biden had appeared to agree with the sentiment expressed by Doyle and others as a way of moving the conversation along and convincing Democrats to support the final compromise. But Biden himself denied to CBS News that he had uttered the word “terrorist” in the meeting in the context of the Tea Party.

Here in Iowa, some people in the Iowa crowd here seemed to be unhappy with Rhodes. One woman was overheard confronting him by saying, “That was extraordinarily rude” to the President.

A second woman who did not want to be identified by name said she felt the exchange was “over the top aggressive.”

But Rhodes was not backing down. “I said my piece,”

awesome.

Yes! That was very helpful.

How come the Tea Party does not have a T beside their names and they use an R.  Are they not able to spell it correctly?  ???

Oh, so that means the Tea Party likes taxes and are just fine with the current taxes since they are saying they are taxed enough already.

I guess that kind of make sense. (not really)

Well, I've heard or seen any video where Biden was referring to the Tea Party as Terrorists.  He already knows lawmaker Mike Doyle called the Tea Party "terrorist" There's no reason for Ryan Rhodes to confront Obama over something that even he knows was not said by Biden.   Its clear he was looking to pick a fight but I think he's upset because he didn't expect for  Obama to gave him the business right back.

The only thing Rhodes proved was how poorly the Tea Party behaves.  Personally, I don't think they are not terrorists...I think that they are anarchists and racists who are disguised as Republicans and unfortunately they are going to really screw the party up.

Most people thought Rhodes was out of line....and he was.

Rhodes was not out of line. Obama works for the people and should answer any question his employer asks of him. Obama also should take responsibility for his Vice-President mainly because he picked Biden as his running mate. This is not the first time Biden has had a foot in mouth moment. With Biden's track record I can be 99% sure Biden said it but as usual it is being swept under the rug.

Still posting that mess, Whork. Notice the bait-and-switch, using the term, "federal funding" overall, instead of specifically welfare spending.

So let us look at a few other points. When Liberals point out the spending, they are actually referring to total spending not simply welfare or entitlement spending. This means things like roads and other infrastructure, bankrolling child support services and departments along with other initiatives and Federal money matches. Educational grants and spending. Military bases and posts. Well the list is endless. Infrastructure spending is one of the most efficient tools of coercion the Federal government has over the States. How many of you remember the old 55 mile per hour speed limit or when some states allowed 18 year old teenagers to purchase alcohol? Well now you know how these states were "convinced" to change their laws. You may also remember that Nevada (I think) bucked this coercion for a while because they had low infrastructure maintenance costs.

In a way welfare sending and educational spending are the two best examples of Federal control as they manage to coerce the states into spending what they want the states to spend. This is one reason in order to determine the true magnitude of educational spending one must look at total government spending into the area and not simply take the Federal budget number.

Basically the Red States are the producers and source of natural resources while most Blue enclaves are the financial office areas. In a very real sense Red states end up transporting the vast amount of their taxable revenue to the Blue enclaves to actually act as middle men and collect the money in sales. Along with, you guessed it, the actual tax money. While I admit this explanation is very simplistic it gets the point across. The real reason Red States receive more total Federal trickle down money is due to the tax and income base which is transferred to the Blue States.

Yet, when we look at welfare in particular.....

If you look at actual welfare spending by case load or per capita the numbers tell a slightly different story than the liberal federalist would like.

Welfare caseloads per capita

Top five states per capita - DC, Guam, Rhode Island, Tenn. and Kalifornia. Hmmmmm things are not what they seem.

Total case load becomes - California, New York, Texas, Penn. Michigan - In that order

As I said an entirely different picture is it not?

So whenever someone tells you Red States receive more money from the Federal government than Blue States remind them that it is the Federal government that decides how much those Red States get to keep in the first place and since they take more from the Red States they have to give more back.
