These were the lifts he was credited with offically and in the gym. The Bench is low, but he hated the lift, and thought it useless. I've seen power meet results from his youth, and he was around #1900 for a total. I'd give him maybe #2200-2300 in his prime.
I use to think that coaching and lack of athletes was an American problem, but I'm changing my mind on that. I still think we don't get as many good lifters as we should, but that's expected. Most with physical talent would rather into the money sports. Can't fault them for that. Also we can't drug as well as we use to:(, yes I would've laughed and dismissed that thought a few years ago too, but I recently saw drug testing logs from a few US hopefuls, some of those guys were being strictly tested 8 times a year. That's rough going.
Say what you want, but for the era he competed in, Patera (and many other U.S. guys) were top level competition.
