UPDATED: Ridley Scott To Direct A New Blade Runner Installment!
Yes, it is really happening...Could we see Deckard on the big screen again? Maybe, but we do have a confirmation that Ridley Scott is returning to direct a brand new version of his classic science fiction film Blade Runner. Check it out!
After a lot of rumors and talks about another Blade Runner film, we now have a confirmation that there will indeed be a new installment with Ridley Scott returning to direct. Deadline has more info:

"After revisiting his classic Alien with the upcoming 3D Fox film Prometheus, Ridley Scott is committing to direct and produce a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film. Scott has signed on to direct and produce a new installment of Blade Runner."

Now, many people are excited for Prometheus, which is a new take on the Alien mythology with different characters. I would say he might do the same with a new Blade Runner. Will it be a prequel, a sequel or a brand new take without Harrison Ford? Well, no one knows that yet, but after this, more details should be available soon. As you know, the 1982 film was based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and in my opinion, it's one of the best science fiction films ever made. So, what do you think? Do you want to see a new Blade Runner film?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: And here is the press release just to confirm the story:

LOS ANGELES, CA, AUGUST 18, 2011—Three-time Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott is set to helm a follow up to his own ground-breaking 1982 science fiction classic “Blade Runner” for Warner Bros-based financing and production company Alcon Entertainment (“The Blind Side,” “The Book of Eli”).

Alcon co-founders and co-Chief Executive Officers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove will produce with Bud Yorkin and Cynthia Sikes Yorkin, along with Ridley Scott. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, CEO’s of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

The filmmakers have not yet revealed whether the theatrical project will be a prequel or sequel to the renowned original.

Alcon and Yorkin recently announced that they are partnering to produce “Blade Runner” theatrical sequels and prequels, in addition to all television and interactive productions.

The original film, which has been singled out as the greatest science-fiction film of all time by a majority of genre publications, was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.” The film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry in 1993 and is frequently taught in university courses. In 2007, it was named the 2nd most visually influential film of all time by the Visual Effects Society.

State Kosove and Johnson: “It would be a gross understatement to say that we are elated Ridley Scott will shepherd this iconic story into a new, exciting direction. We are huge fans of Ridley’s and of the original ‘Blade Runner.’ This is once in a lifetime project for us.”

Scott is represented by David Wirtschafter at WME and David Nochinson at Ziffren Brittenham.

Released by Warner Bros. almost 30 years ago, “Blade Runner” was adapted by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples from Philip K. Dick’s groundbreaking novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?” and directed by Scott following his landmark “Alien.” The film was nominated for two Academy Awards (Best Visual Effects, and Best Art Direction). Following the filming of “Blade Runner,” the first of Philip K. Dick’s works to be adapted into a film, many other of Dick’s works were likewise adapted, including “Total Recall,” “A Scanner Darkly,” “Minority Report,” “Paycheck,” and the recent “The Adjustment Bureau,” among others.

Thanks to Collider for the press release.

Producer Andrew Kosove Comments On New Blade Runner Film; Harrison Ford Won't Return?
Talking about how important it was to get Ridley Scott back for the new Blade Runner film, producer Andrew Kosove also mentions that the soonest they could start shooting is in 2013. Check it out!

Reinvention or reimagine...Those are the two words that are very popular in Hollywood right now. Whether if it is reinvention of the single character or the entire film, sometimes it works, especially when you have the original director back for a brand new version of the film. In this case, that is Ridley Scott, who directed a sci-fi film noir Blade Runner from 1982. Starring Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard and Rutger Hauer as replicant (genetically engineered organic robots) Roy Batty, film was set in a dystopian Los Angeles in 2019. By many, this is one of the best films in its genre. Today, the news broke that Scott is confirmed to direct another film, but it's still unclear what will it be, a sequel, prequel or something else. Well, talking to LA Times' 24 Frames, producer Andrew Kosove offered some new info, and why it was necessary to get Ridley Scott back. More below.

On gettind Ridley Scott back to direct the film:

"We had a few Plan Bs. But we were really focusing on Plan A, which was Ridley. Everything Ridley does as a filmmaker is fresh. I believe he sees an opportunity to create something that’s wholly original from the first Blade Runner. When we made the first announcement there was a lot of skepticism, understandably. And now with Ridley coming back there's a greater level of comfort. And once we have the writer, I think fans will feel even more comfortable. We want people to know that we're very serious about doing this in an artistic way. This isn't just commercial fodder."

As for when to expect the film, LA TIMES mentions this:

"The soonest Kosove could see the movie beginning shooting is early 2013 - it would take at least 18 months to hire a writer, get a script in working order under Scott's guidance, cast the film and move into production. Either way, that means a new "Blade Runner" wouldn't be in theaters until 2014 at the earliest."

And what about Harrison Ford? Well, if you ask Kosove, he won't be back:

"In no way do I speak for Ridley Scott. But if you're asking me will this movie have anything to do with Harrison Ford, the answer is no. This is a total reinvention, and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."

The most important part of this new version was getting Scott back. Now that he is, and even without Ford, this could work. I really love the 1982 film, and it is something unique. But that's just my opinion. So, what do you think? If Ford is not coming back, who would you like to see in the leading role?

I read years ago that there was supposed to be a movie called: The Soldier, sequel to Blade Runner.

I never happened though and that Kurt Russel movie came out of it. Russels character is a veteran of
Tannhouser gate and couple of more similarities if I remember correctly.

Blade Runner is one of those movies that takes me back to the great memories of my childhood. I still remember passing by the theater when it had that movie poster in the glass. Man, I wish I could relive my youth again. Lol

Blade Runner is a cult classic that was years ahead of it's time. I will definitely give the reboot a look.

Spectacular First Images of Michael Fassbender & Charlize Theron in Prometheus
Scans of the new Entertainment Weekly have hit the internet, and they feature brand new images of the outstanding cast, the alien sets, and a mysterious giant head.

From these scans of Ridley Scott's prequel to his 1979 classic sci-fi film, Alien, we know that Prometheus is the name of the spaceship. We also have a great quote from Ridley Scott, he says,
"Fans of the original Alien will definitely notice some things, especially toward the end. But I really can't say any more than that."

Me too. It's my favourite film. A real triumph of style over substance. Yeah, I know that there are better movies out there, like Citizen Kane. etc. But it just excels on so many levels. I remember exactly when and where I saw it, and the now-deceased person I saw it with. Classic!

Ridley Scott Talks About Giger's Involvement in PROMETHEUS & No Original Xenomorphs
Ridley Scott spoke with the website Filmophilia while he was filming key scenes in Iceland, and he talks about comparing Noomi Rapace to Sigourney Weaver in his prequel to Alien.

While Ridley Scott was being interviewed by Filmophilia he wonders why the other creative minds that worked on the sequels to his 1979 classic Alien never used the Space Jockeys. Which is a enormous Alien body that is found in first movie as some of the astronauts explore a spaceship. There they come upon the fossilized remains of the Space Jockey, whose body has a gaping wound by it's chest. A wound that implies that an alien at one point gestated and hatched in the Space Jockey, just like what we see with the humans later in the film.

EGE: Will you be using any of Giger’s original design for this film?

RS: We’ve had a pretty good relationship with Giger for many years. I was the first one to go see him in Switzerland, and persuade him to get on a plane. He wouldn’t get on a plane, because he was afraid of flying. And he finally came to Shepperton. He was with me for eleven months. Never went into town, stayed over a pub in Shepperton. Very guy, not exotic. You’d think he’d be in a suite in a hotel. He’s in a pub. He was in a room over a pub, and he was very happy there. And yeah, I brought him in, I showed him what we were doing, showed him the story and he liked it a lot. So he’s doing a little bit of work for me. He’s been doing some murals, big murals, which we’ll see in almost one of the first chambers we encounter when we land where we’re gonna go.

EGE: Final question. I have a feeling what the answer will be, but many want to know. Will we see the original xenomorph in Prometheus?

RS: No. Absolutely not. They squeezed it dry. He (the xenomorph) did very well. (He laughs) He survived, he’s now in Disneyland in Orlando, and no way am I going back there. How did he end up in Disneyland? I saw him in Disneyland, Jesus Christ!

EGE: Do you see Noomi [Rapace] as something of a successor to Sigourney?

RS: Yeah, I mean, they’re quite different women. Sigourney, to start with, is 6’1’’ in stocking feet, and Noomi insists that she is 5’1’’ in stocking feet. (He laughs) I look at a lot of foreign movies, and unfortunately a lot of mainstream movies aren’t terribly good. You know. (He laughs)

The most influential for me are the new ones around the corner, and I look at a lot of foreign films and a lot of Scandinavian films. The Scandinavians have a very good touch for making movies, you guys (Icelanders) as well. I saw Dragon Tattoo a year ago, the first one. And, “Wow, who is that?” and from that I said, “This is the girl that’s going to do the film.” She came to L.A. and I met with her, and discovered that she’s in fact extraordinarily posh, as opposed to punk. So there was a real actress. A real actress, very, very good. So, I don’t know, she will just do great.

Harrison Ford In Early Negotiations For New BLADE RUNNER Film
As progress on Ridley Scott's upcoming Blade Runner installment continues, the actor behind Deckard in the original film has apparently begin early talks to join the cast of the movie.
PaulRom - 2/4/2012

Back in August of last year, Alcon Entertainment producer Andrew Kosove said that there were no plans to bring back Harrison Ford in Ridley Scott's upcoming Blade Runner movie. Whether or not the film is a sequel or prequel has yet to be announced, but the following news may indicate that the movie is indeed a direct sequel to the original film.

Twitch Film has learned that Harrison Ford - who played lead character 'Deckard' in the original 1982 film - has entered early negotiations to join the new Blade Runner installment. As the discussions are still early, it's possible that things won't work out and Ford won't appear in the movie. Still, it can be considered evidence that the film is a sequel to Scott's original film.

In addition, back in November, Ridley Scott himself stated the film was 'liable' to be a sequel. But expect an official announcement for the movie soon, including the revealing of the screenwriter and whether or not it'll be a sequel or prequel.

Be sure to check back for the latest on the new Blade Runner film, which is widely speculated to be Ridley Scott's next project (despite having various other films in the works).

It's been a while since we've last heard something official about the new Blade Runner film, which will have Ridley Scott (director of the original movie, which starred Harrison Ford) return to the sci-fi/dystopian universe. Lately, Scott has been promoting his new sci-fi film Prometheus (which sees him returning to the Alien universe), and in a lengthy interview with The Daily Beast, he updates on the current status of the Blade Runner sequel/spin off.

"Funny enough, I started my first meetings on the Blade Runner sequel last week. We have a very good take on it. And we’ll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

It was previously rumored that Harrison Ford could return as Deckard in the new film, though that rumor was debunked (though Scott expressed interest in working with Ford again in the future). Scott's next project following Prometheus will be The Counselor (where he reunites with Michael Fassbender, after previously working together on Prometheus), which will begin production this summer. But it's definitely possible that Scott will get to work on the new Blade Runner movie afterwards.

Sean Young Talks BLADE RUNNER Sequel & Her Interpretation Of 'Rachael' In the Original Film

So, it's been known for a while now that Ridley Scott is set to direct a new installment of Blade Runner for Alcon Entertainment. According to many, the 1982 film which was based on Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, is one of the greatest science-fiction films of all time, and Scott said that he wants to explore more of this universe. If this is indeed a sequel as they say, what about the original cast? In a recent interview with Crave Online, Sean Young confirmed that she met with Alcon Entertainment about the new film. More below:

"Well, I did meet with Alcon, the company that owns it and is planning to do the remake with Ridley. I did meet with them, but I think at that point they just wanted to meet me and I don’t think they have any plans of using any of the original people, although I can’t say for sure. I do think, let me just say it right here, I do think it would be a disappointment to the audience not to have Rachel in it but you know what, folks in Hollywood make mistakes all the time."

She also shared her thoughts regarding 'Rachael', who is supposed to be a NEXUS-6 prototype:

"Oh no, in the interpretation I’m the one that has no end date. I’m the one that rides off in the car with him at the end that has no end date. I’m Nexus-7, not Nexus-6."

Ridley Scott already said that 'Deckard' is definitely NEXUS-6 model, and they only have a four-year lifespan. It will be interesting to see where they take the story for the next film.
