The issue was whether the "wealthy" pay a disproportionate share of income taxes.  High income earners are not necessarily wealthy, but they do pay the majority of income taxes, while the bottom 50 percent pays almost nothing.  I'm not suggesting lower income earners need to pay more.  My point was high income earners are already paying their "fair share," plus some, and we should be trying to reduce everyone's taxes.

many very wealthy people pay a smaller % of their income than people making less than 100k a year (or in some cases even 50k)

wouldn't you call that "disproportionate" ?

Alot depends on demographics. Obviously someone making 200k per year in Topeka has a much higher standard of living than someone making 200k on Long Island. It's why a flat consumption tax is needed, then everyone pays based on their standard of living, not just income.

And?  If you are still blaming Bush 3 fucking years later - all it shows is that Obama is not capable of fixing any of the problems he campaigned for and was elected to fix.

If we agree on that, fine. But as I've said before, no one has stepped up to the plate and looked more competent. I'd rather let his camp try to fix what mess they've inherited and mucked up further, at least they're familiar with it, since they're buried to their necks in it.

Bringing someone in new, just for the sake of someone new, isn't necessary at this point, they need to be better. Until then, my vote is not changing.

I wish Trump would've thrown his hat in, but he's all talk.

How do you fix a mess when you are actively covering up the wrong deeds of the wrong doers and those who helped crash the system?

That is what Obama is doing today!

He is not even trying to fix anything, he is enabling and covering up the fraud.

I agree with you about the standard of living, but that's not what I was talking about.  Demographics don't have anything to do with whether high income earners pay a disproportionate share of federal income taxes.

Well, if you ask a household with an income of 150k in anytown USA, they will go to the grave telling you they are not wealthy, just getting by. Go ask an a/c tech who makes 50k if that same person is wealthy?

It's a discussion with no right answer, because everyone will defend themselves, which is why a flat consumption tax is the only way. Common sense, not self interest.

No argument from me.  I stated earlier that income doesn't necessarily equal wealth.  Still, that isn't what I was talking about.

I don't know whether so called wealthy people pay a disproportionate amount of tax or not. One camp says yes, the other no. So, rather than debate it, install a flat tax, problem solved.

But in real life.. that "3 years later shit" sounds good... and its good for a partisan sound-byte, but as we all know, these things dont work in a vacuum and have to run their course. But i know its much easier (and  practical as well as resourceful for republicans) to pass it on and ignore the very real timeline that a recession like this has to go through. But its easier this way..

Obama HIMSELF made the timeline.

The deficit was supposed to be cut in HALF, by now....NOT EVEN CLOSE!!!

Unemployment was suppoed to be down to 6% by now, not to exceed 8%, courtesy of his stimulus....It's been at least 9% for 27 of his 31 months in office.

Go back to 2010. The year started with 9.7% unemployment and ENDED with 9.8%, going no lower than 9.5% (and that was only because of the Census workers).

He stated that, if he didn't turn things around in about 3 years, he deserved to be a one-term president. By his timeline, he's only got 5 months left.

By Obama's own standards, YES!! When it comes to spending, he makes Bush look like Scrooge.

If you're willing to look at the numbers, you would know that higher income earners pay a disproportionate share of federal income taxes.  I posted the numbers in this thread.

Whether high income earners are "wealthy" is another story, but that is typically how people playing class warfare define "the rich."
