After a lunch speech today, Ron Paul slammed the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, and said that no national response to Hurricane Irene is necessary.

“We should be like 1900; we should be like 1940, 1950, 1960,” Paul said. “I live on the gulf coast, we deal with hurricanes all the time. Galveston is in my district."

Galveston, circa 1900, when a hurricane killed somewhere between 6,000 and 12,000 people. Here's how they dealt with it:

The dead bodies were so numerous that burying them all was not possible. The dead were initially weighted down and dumped at sea, but when the gulf currents washed many of the bodies back onto the beach, a new solution was needed. Funeral pyres were set up wherever the dead were found and burned for weeks after the storm. The authorities passed out free whiskey to sustain the distraught men conscripted for the gruesome work of collecting and burning the dead.

he's probably right.  They fuck up more shit than they get right.  It might be better left to the state governments to handle.  The national guard should be at home for shit like this and the governor can use them for emergencies like this.

Their track record is pretty abysmal. Maybe more money can fix it. After all, that's the tried-and-true Keynesian answer to everything!

withou fema, who would run all the obama camps?  he has to lock up all the bald white 'potential terrorists' a week before election so they can't vote madoff/Vandersloot into office.

Spot on.  Brown was a complete political appointee, in no way qualified to run FEMA, and should never have been there to begin with.  Total fuckup by Bush putting him there.

Yea, that's called progress.  No wait, let's do like they did in 1900 - those were such good years.  ::)

Turns out ron paul was right.  This was the most overhyped bs in decades.

Thank god bama skipped his last game of golf to get a hold of this.  I was worried that wo his strong leadership we were not going to make it.

Yeah, making sure 12000 dead bodies aren't lying around the city and having "conscripted" men toss them onto make-shift pyres is soooo parasitic.  ::)

Good thing as an RP follower you're keeping the irony going.  Advocating using "conscripted" men while advocating less government and more freedom.  Idiot.

You Paultards really take ridiculous to whole new levels.

Over 7 Billion dollars in damage, 25 people killed so far and rising.  It may not be the worst of all time but it was still pretty bad, and widespread throughout the entire East Coast on top of that.

No shit genius - I live in NYC and was told this was going to be like Day after Tommorow.

We had some storms about two years ago far worse than this locally.

You don't think millions of americans without electricity for days or weeks is a "big deal" which is disruptive to our country?

I remember how life for this entire half of the state STOPPED for 7 days after Hurricane Charlie.  Surely millions or even billions of $ lost - from the power alone, not even counting minor cosmetic damage to houses.

And yes, Home Depot, Lowe's and the Media loooooooves these events.

But if you are about to lose power for a week, it's a big deal.

"Ron Paul says we don't need FEMA"

Neither do the Amish.  After a disaster, they always turn down government assistance.  Their entire community helps one another rebuild, and they do that very quickly.

Yeah, although they are a very small community.  You can do a lot with small communities that you cannot do with large ones.
