I have a real hard time with doing them using the criss cross arms.  In fact, it becomes more of an Arm Exercise at times than a leg using this method.  I see some techniques with wrists bent back in an abnormal position that not only looks painful, but unsafe.  Is there any method that is worth doing?

I find that I can put about 150 lbs on a Tricep Bar and do front squats that way and it works very well and is totally different than a barbell in that the weight is centered differently.  It works incredibly well.  If you haven`t tried it with a Tricep Bar, I recommend it.  IT is TOTALLY different than you are used to.

I am so sick of doing back squats and want to use my barbell for front!

Ideally, the proper way is to just keep stretching, etc...... till you can use the clean/rack position for front squats-

.

Just posting that so folks get an idea, plus it's an impressive video.

The Genie type works well for bigger guys that just don't want to take the time to work into the Rack position method.

What I think will work for you is the strap method, see here for an idea-

.

.

It takes all the strain off the wrists and biceps.

If your shoulders/arms really get tired maybe you should try to 1) just get used to it or 2) try easy low rep sets with light weight and short breaks. This way your legs might get fatigued first. Oh yeah and try stretching the wrists, the "clean grip" is the most solid grip.

If some can't use a cross grip we either use straps or a clean grip, i personally dont like the clean grip because it's hard on wrists but some like it so i let them use it. We also do a zercher squat.

The sting ray is a great alternative.  Plastic molds which go on front delts to do front squats, made by same company that made manta ray for back squats.

I've always done them Poliquin-style with straps used like this:

Mimmicks the OL way without the need for that level of wrist flexibility.
