Living in fear and overvigilant citizen spies lol...

In the moments before the F-16 fighter jets were summoned, the crew of Frontier Airlines Flight 623 feared that a passenger's frequent and unusually long trips to the aircraft lavatory on Sept. 11 were a sign that a potential terrorist plot was underway.

Later, when the plane had landed in Detroit, reports suggested that the peculiar bathroom breaks had been a reckless tryst between two passengers determined to “make out.”

In the cold light of Sept. 12, however, the Federal Bureau of Investigation revealed the rather mundane truth: It was simply a single man having an off-color day.

IN PICTURES: 9/11 memorials around the world

The story of Flight 623 from Denver to Detroit – as well as another Sunday flight in which airline crew requested fighter-jet escorts – was different sort of reminder of 9/11 on its 10-year anniversary. As New York and Washington held memorial services, the two airline incidents marked a return, for one day at least, to the weeks when the fear of fresh terrorist attacks changed how Americans saw the everyday world around them.

There was some reason for the vigilance. On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that there was a "credible threat" for an attack over the Sept. 11 weekend. But reports suggested that threat centered around a truck bomb in New York or Washington.

The FBI said Monday that the three people detained from Flight 623 in Detroit did nothing wrong. In fact, the two men and one woman didn’t even know each other. One man was unwell, and the others in the row had to repeatedly stand up to let him pass on his way to the bathroom – which drew attention.

So what's the answer here?

Let's just say that something went wrong, a bomb exploded in the bathroom, plane still able to land.  Then survivors talking about some douchebag continually going to the bathroom and nobody said or did anything.

Maybe asking the guy what was wrong would have been the answer, or is that too simple?

Typical government response would go like this:  Install X-ray machines with satelite connections around all airline toilets.  Hire a super special force of well trained ex McDonalds workers for 40,000 dollars a year to observe toilets in flight from the ground.  With so many flights daily, there should probably be a toilet czar to oversee the safey of toilets over American territory, not to forget TSA will have to start questioning during the screening, "Sir, have you eaten any Thai food within the last 24 hours?" lol..

Or you could just ask the guy if he's ok.

Or you could understand that it was 9/11 and expect that tensions will be heightened.  ::)

Talk about fear-mongering.

Agreed, we don't want to over do it, but I'm guess I'm really asking where the middle ground is from my hypothetical.

Obviously if he had actually been a terrorist feigning illness, asking him would accomplish nothing.  In fact, I'm not sure from the article, but did they?  Maybe they did ask and didn't find it convincing.  IDK, but it sure sounds like damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Some AF pilots got some practice, and it sounds like those involved were just temporarily detained, no real biggie.  Had this been the real deal, I think people would have been just as critical for a lack of response.
