Obama: My bill will create 1.9 million jobs
By David Jackson, USA TODAY Updated 1h 39m ago

President Obama has attached a big number to his jobs bill: 1.9 million.

At a private fundraiser last night, Obama said his proposal would create 1.9 millions jobs, while reducing the 9.1% unemployment rate by a percentage point; he also said it would add two percentage points to the Gross Domestic Product.

Assuming it's passed by Congress, that is.

"The Republicans in the House, their natural instinct right now is not to engage in the kind of cooperation that we'd like to see," Obama said in promoting his American Jobs Act.

Obama's projections appear to be based on those made by Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analystics, who also spoke of 1.9 million jobs and a percentage point drop in the jobless rate.

Zandi also criticized the plan for ignoring home foreclosure "crisis," calling that a major impediment economic recovery.

And any economic projections are dangerous in the political context -- as Republicans prove every day when they cite the mistaken impact of Obama's 2009 stimulus bill.

"Back in 2009 he promised that the stimulus one would keep unemployment below 8%," said Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus. "Well of course it's still above 9% and it's been that way for many, many months."

I have a bill that will create 5 billion jobs.

Even if that number had the least bit of truth to it, those jobs would all be temporary. The capital would be sucked out of the efficient private sector and redistributed in a very inefficient,  way thus burning it up forever and wasting even more. The money would then run out and we will be back to square one or even worse.

JUST LIKE AFTER THE LAST STIM BILL and Bushes before that.

This guy is a dope.

1.9 million jobs.  Is that more or less than the amount of jobs creasted by his first stim bill? ::)

Seriously. He must think that we are all as stupid as blacken.

He does think we are stupid enough to believe him!

Remember - the morons elected this guy so he already is perfectly aware of how dumb they are.

"Nevertheless, the 3.1-percentage-point part of the president’s proposal could raise employment by at least a million, albeit the duration of job creation is related to how long the tax cut lasts. I expect that every percentage-point reduction in employers’ costs raises employment by about a percentage point and real gross domestic product by about 0.7 percentage point.

That means employment could be roughly three million greater during the period of the tax cut than it would otherwise.

The tax cut is proposed to last a year, and some of the estimated three million incremental job-years — a job that lasts a year, or 12 jobs that last a month — could be spread over time. So we might see only two million in the first year of the cut, with another one million after the cut expires. But still that’s a lot of jobs."

Can you refute Casey Mulligan's interpretation?

He is proving Obama's words could actually be correct.

So is your assertion that this won't work.  You do not know and can not know so why do you claim that you do?

Casey Mulligan is a chicago economist just so you know.  Oh and he runs a website called stopthefiscalstimulus.co m and if he wrote this was not going to create one single job you would jump all over it.  But now you're presented with a balanced piece by a respected economist that you have posted articles from before, and you play coy.

Ha! Don't pretend like it's some sort of intelligent position you are taking.  You hate the democrats and are only backing these guys because they oppose Obama.

Refute what Casey Mulligan says, you have done nothing to prove your case that 1.9 million jobs could not be created with this bill.

I believe it is you who is the zero.

Yeah ok - lets see what predictions this "economist" made before the stim bill passed and see his track record.  Deal?

Problem with "payroll tax cuts" is that you are intentionally defunding programs like SS and medicare as more and more people are dependent on those programs!

This is worse than a ponzi scam.

So, you hate SS and medicare as it is.  Why do you care?

Can you refute what Casey Mulligan says?  Don't change the topic.  You claimed, falsely, that this was a 'joke' and could not produce 1.9 million jobs.  I have provieded proof that it could in fact produce that many and more from an economist who hates fiscal stimulus and is a free market die hard.

The first stim bill under Bush was a massive failure (300 billion), the second under Obama was a massive failure(800 billion) and I'm sure this next one will also fail just as bad(475 billion). A lot of people the backed the first 2 were proven dead wrong. I'm sure Casey Mulligan will be proven wrong as well. I will go ahead and say it will create short term artificial demand via redistribution and some tax cuts...but once those money runs out whatever temporary/sugar high gains will be gone. We will be left with another fiscal hole and more inefficient use of capital.

Those are just the actual "Stimulus" bills by law. All the other stuff liek U.E. insurance to infinity, food stamps, transfer payments, ZIRP, 3.7 trillion dollar budgets, 1.7 trillion dollar deficits, Cash for Clunkers, green energy rebates etc...that's all a form of stimulus too. And it's all failed.

U.E. is too high, wages/hours worked/hourly earnings are still stagnant or in decline. U.E. claims are still well above 400k, people are still in huge amounts of debt and the list goes on. This bill is a fart in the wind, more band-aids, more economic heroine and inject-able adrenaline that only masks the gaping whole in the patients chest and head.

Casey Mulligan was anti-stimulus, has been since the first time.  He is pro-payroll tax cut though and shows how the president can come up with his numbers.  I'm not saying that they will pan out 100%, no one knows for sure and no one can know for sure.  But when a respected economist, who is as free market as they come, backs up Obama's numbers i think it holds a lot more weight than if say, Krugman did.

BTW Mulligan hates krugman.

Trusting someone is not the same as knowing whether or not the job numbers are plausible and possible.

I have proven they are, you have done nothing to prove they are not.

By caving back to 'well this didn't work at this time' you have proven yet again you are incapable of refuting actual points with actual information other than hyperbole and drama.

Better go back to the birth cert CT or what michelle said on wednesday the 15th at 2pm east standard time, because you know that's what you'd rather talk about.
