Military police involved in policing civilians?
« on: September 29, 2011, 10:14:16 PM »
what do you guys think of this?

"State, local and military police will also work together under the program to crack down on drunk people who disobey the law."

Also the part in the story where the police intend on elisting posses to infiltrate parties to report people?

drunk driving is a problem, but I dunno about this?

What's the difference? I'm for anyone keeping a drunk from getting behind the wheel, or enforcing the law and paying the price if they do.

The military isn't allowed to police the general populace.

Dude..u don't want kids who've spent 10 years wacking rags policing our streets. Once an incident happens....they won't separate there from here. This is bad on a billion levels. I don't know the details so I have to assume that the military police will conduct checkpoints on the AF base and support local law in a a non enforcement way off base. The rules are pretty strict as to what we can and can't do.

Posse Comitatus has its exceptions, though I don't know what they are.  Still, even if it is within the realm of an exception, I thinks it's certainly a bad precedent.

Of course, we really don't know what "working together" really means, so it could be much ado about nothing.

Having been both Military and Civilian police I can offer some insight into what they probably mean.

The military will participate by education programs on base. The military will participate in stepping up their patrols on base for dWI drivers. They will likely step up their enforcement at the gates when cars are entering or leaving base. They will not enforce laws off base property.

As an aside, the military does cooperate with civilian departments in special circumstances under Memorandums of Understanding. For example, almost all bases have bomb dog teams but they may be the only bomb dog team for 7 counties or within 200 miles of a town. They have an agreement in place to assist civilian agencies if called on bomb threats. Their E.O.D or bomb squads do the same thing. But enforcing laws off base.. never seen it during the 10 yrs I was a part of it.

While all that is going on on the base, the civilian department will also be reaching out to the community in forums trying to educate them on the consequences of alchohol abuse. They will also be emphasizing their DWI enforcement.

I think this is pretty much what they'll do. Many post in the Army have DOD police instead of MP's running things. It would be like the Capital police running a checkpoint within their jurisdiction. Our EOD teams do alot of domestic support for Congress and the President.

That's how it is here (except for the Marines).  Civilians man most of the gates.

why are you coming at me that that?  I was asking what others think of it.  I know it's been going on here and there.  Not sure if it's legal or not.  Asking others what they think isn't exactly worthy of flipping out over...  This story is being carried mostly on libertarian sites anyway.

What do you guys think about the part where they'll recruit civilian posses to crash parties and report on people?  I'm totally for getting drunks off the road but this seems kinda WTF to me.  "who's that guy over there on your couch Tom, I don't remember him..." "Uh, I don't know, I thought he came with you."

Wyoming does have a problem with drunk drivers.  It's nothing for a lot of people to start drinking on their way home from work.  A lot of people here drive 20 to 80 miles or more to work and they'll take beer with them in their truck and drink on the way back.  The roadsides are littered with beer cans.
