All About Sleep - for those who have problems getting enough
« on: October 04, 2011, 08:57:49 PM »
I usually need at least 8 - 9 hrs of sleep.

However the last 8 years I have rarely went to bed at a normal time (22 - 01 hrs).

Sometimes I go at around 04.00 other times 06.00 so I end up having slept only 3 - 4 hrs and  feeling like shit all day.

OTC pills don't help and I don't want to get addicted to sleeping pills.

Any getbiggers have any tips for me?

1. Don't drink alcohol before bed.
2. Don't look at the computer RIGHT before bed
3. Don't look at the internet on your PHONE right before bed
4. Have a small meal about a 1/2 - 1 hour before bed.
5. Don't have the TV on RIGHT before bed
6. Turn off the radio RIGHT before bed.
7. Turn off all lights and close the shades at bed time.
8. Have some sleepy time tea w/valarian and 2 melatonin.

This should do the trick.

Do you always judge people based on their sleep patterns?

Spot on. Almost nothing beats a good pre-bed routine. Drugs work, but they're not the best option. Use them sparingly and cycle different drugs as to avoid dependency (both physical and habitual).

I have a habit of taking Benedryl before bed. Shit gets me nodding so quickly that my head's bobbing like a whore before I even notice. I can barely drag myself to bed and just wanna pass out wherever it happened to kick in lol

Drink dry gin and fuck a hot bitch. If she snores punch her in the face. Should do the trick.

Avoid any kind of caffeine drinks such as tea right before bed.  Especially tea, because it tends to make me pee too much at night.
Don't let a naughty cat sleep inside, as they will always wake you up to be fed or go outside.
Do something relaxing at night, such as read a book or watch tv.  I tend to always watch tv and then I go on my laptop in bed to relax.
Have an orgasm.  Masturbate right before you want to go to sleep.  I find this really helps to destress the body.

Reading helps.

Clearing your mind can work both ways. It can either rejuvenate your mind while your body stays tired physically, or it can clear your head of the daily grind and relax you mentally.

Some call it "meditation" ~ Actually clearing your mind of all the random thoughts that come rushing in from every direction is an aquired skill. You have to work at it.

And then there is Ambien.

I find taking magnesium helps with muscle cramps.  If you take it an hour before bed everynight, it helps prevent muscle cramps and you have a more restful sleep.

Try all of the below recommended things first. If they don't work, talk to your doctor about Trazadone. I used to wake up all night long in hour or two intervals. My doctor prescribed Trazadone for depression and sleep. I no longer have issues with depression but I still take a very small dose of Trazadone each night for a full night's sleep with no "morning after" side effects.

You ever try Zopiclone or any other sleep meds?

My mom and a ton of other nurses take them because of their brutal shift work and holy fuck. I recall taking Zopiclone, ZMA, melatonin, Benadryl, GABA, a few glasses of whiskey and coke and smoked a joint. I'm pretty sure I took some other sleeping meds too. If you can stave actual sleep on sleeping meds it is a fucked up experience. I took this combo and was wired, then had the craziest lucid dreams and nightmares that night.

I surprisingly woke up feeling like a champ though. Most of those things on their own leave me feeling groggy, so I just get on top of my wife and do some horizontal cardio to help fall asleep. I only take sleep meds in emergency or recreational purposes ;D

I always drink a lot of caffeine before bed, in fact, I am drinking a Pepsi Max as I type this and I just ate a ton of refried beans.  Has no bearing on sleeping for me.  I will read for an hour or two and go to bed at 5 am.  The dogs will probably get me up around 12-2 PM.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol before you go to sleep, alcohol will help you get to sleep but reduces the regenerative properties of sleep.

Trazadone was the worst drug I've ever taken. Blurred my vision, but didn't make me tired. 25mg. (out of 150mg.) stayed in my system for two days straight.

Never again. For some people it works, others (like me) ~ too sensitive to it.

Ambien or OTC "alesteril" combo.

I've had trouble falling asleep for as long as I can remember and I'll tell you, pretty much everything in the list above is awesome advice and will probably benefit you. The only possible exception might be music - it helps some people, so you may want to try both with and without music. Listening to a narration (some sort of audiobook maybe, but nothing too weighty!) could also help. As I said, depends on the person.

I will also add two things that have helped me:

- get a set of blackout curtains to mask any light sources from coming in.
- don't waste hours in bed trying to fall asleep. If you aren't asleep in 30 minutes, get up, do something for 5 minutes and try again.

I still have days when sleep just won't come, but luckily they are the exception nowadays.

The Coach's post is very good advice, but I will add that it helps me for the room to be very cool. If the room is average or even a little warm, I can't sleep at all.
