There is nothing in the Old Testament banning premarital sex unless it is adultery. No where in the Bible is premarital sex explicitly banned. The age difference is also not addressed and there are examples of sex between couples of various age differences. As long as it is consensual it is not considered a sin. The prohibition of premarital sex is more a result of it being frown on and discourage and over the centuries became to be consider sinful. As well, as the broad definition of the original Hebrew term for fornication. Similar how many conflate, "Thou shall not kill" with "Thou shall not murder." The original Hebrew term referred to murder. To kill an innocent person.
What they did is considered illegal in this country. It is an arbitrary law.
There is another concept in religious teaching having to do with the holy and unholy. Think of it as moral propriety. What is proper and appropriate. Eating like a dog is considered unholy. It diminishes the human being. Just like walking around naked or relieving yourself in public. If you see a grown man in his mid thirties hanging with teenagers, both boys and girls and even without sexual interest, it is still inappropriate. What does it say and how does it appear for a grown man to be out in the park jumping rope with teens, going with them to the movies, having sleep overs, going to dances, carnivals... never hanging out with people his own age. It would seem odd and inappropriate -- and it would be. I never for a minute believed that Michael Jackson was a pedophile. He was just weird. Never had a childhood and remained in a perpetual state of arrested emotional development.
This Ellis guy didn't commit any sin. Didn't hurt anyone maliciously. Should not be put in jail. He's just another in a long, long line of narcissistic hedonists who's level of self-absorption and self-indulgence is just par for the course. The girl was no innocent angel either. Just as manipulative in pursuing her own self-interest and willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her ends. Don't fool yourself just because she is young.
Just a couple of moral low lives doing what comes nature to a person when you believe in nothing. Generation nothingness: believe in nothing, stand for nothing, become nothing.
