Florida School District Installs Fingerprint Scanners on Buses
« on: October 09, 2011, 03:43:55 AM »
A county in Florida has installed fingerprint scanners in school buses. Described as “one of the most monumental things that Washington County has ever done” by an education bureaucrat, the machines have been used since the beginning of the school year.

School officials decided moving the scanners to the buses was a more effective way to monitor students. They plan to have a scanner and laptop installed on every bus in the district.

“We got to talking about attendance in our district and how it was inconsistent,” School Superintendent Sandra Cook told WJHG, an NBC affiliate in Panama City, Florida.

wonder what the future looks like with kids being raised in an environment where you routinely get finger printed, iris scanned, watch TSA agents search your dad and scan your mom while she is holding her hands raised in the air etc etc...

Probably like this lol:

kids get lost in school bus lineups at the end of the day all the time.

it's a clusterfck.

I'm actually okay with parents and admin being able to find a student INSTANTLY with an iPad or whatever.

you're talking about like the parents being able to track their kids.  yea, that's up to the parents if they want to do that.  but total tracking by the school?

i worked the bus ramp and parent pickup every day as a teacher.  it's always a mess.  if a kid wants to skip the bus or catch a ride or just plain walk out - they can get away with it.  A few times a week, we'd have an irate parent because he kid did this or that.  And if a pedo wanted to steal a kid, they could get away with it.  Just too hard for 30 staff members to control 800 kids for dismissal.

I like the idea of me, as a parent, being able to call teh office and they'd be able to say "Little Barry scanned Onto the bus at 3:15 pm and scanned off at 123 main street stop at 3:35 pm.  Or, "Your son Carter scanned for parent pickup at 2:48 pm and went to this person who is on your approved list".

Do I think chertoff and his nuthuggers are a bunch of chickenhawk scaremongers bent on getting paid on the exploitation and control of the population?  Sure!  But I do like this idea because it'll help keep track of kids in a very chaotic daily environment.

Aw heeeeck no.  I hope one of the parents challenges this.  Ridiculous.  I would never let them fingerprint my kid.
